Job summary

Cooley LLP is seeking a Conflicts Staff Attorney to join the Business Intake and Conflicts team in Chicago. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with ethical rules and firm risk policies while supporting onboarding of clients and matters.

The staff attorney will monitor ABA model rules, conduct conflicts analyses, draft screens and waivers, and collaborate with several teams to resolve conflicts efficiently. Strong ethics knowledge and confidentiality are essential.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of conflicts resolution experience or 5+ years as a practicing attorney, preferably with a large law firm.
• JD degree.
• Active member in good standing or registered in-house counsel of the bar(s) in all jurisdictions from which you regularly work, as well as the jurisdiction in which your assigned office is located, if applicable

Responsibilities

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct as adopted in each state in which the firm maintains an office, and jurisdictional differences in all states, countries and practice areas in which the firm conducts business
• Monitor ABA and jurisdictional rules for changes. Suggests modifications in firm policy to the Associate Director of Conflicts for approval
• Analyze and resolve conflicts of interest related to new business and new hires
• Effectively work with Managers, Directors, Conflict Analysts and firm attorneys to obtain the relevant information to make determinations on conflict issues
• Draft and review ethical screens, conflict waivers and risk management engagement letter provisions
• Assist with administering the Firm's client engagement terms program including review and coding of outside counsel guidelines
• Conduct research projects as assigned relating to conflicts of interest issues
• Conduct advanced level research projects on corporate affiliations and corporate relatedness
• All other duties as assigned or required
