Conflicts Analyst

Cooley is seeking a Conflicts Analyst to join the Business Intake and Conflicts team.

Position summary: The Conflicts Analyst is responsible for the identification, analysis, and resolution of conflicts requests, using independent judgment and demonstrating a thorough understanding of business needs when clearing incoming work and candidates. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Position responsibilities:

  • Analyze and process conflict requests to ensure firm engagements and hires are clear from a business and ethical perspective.
  • Prepare database search terms and create conflicts reports for related parties, including high-volume and bulk searches.
  • Conduct corporate research to verify the identity of related parties and address potential conflicts or high-profile issues.
  • Identify existing and potential conflicts by reviewing conflicts reports and supporting documents.
  • Interpret database results and conflicts reports for firm partners, counsel, attorneys, and staff.
  • Draft concise descriptions of potential conflicts based on professional conduct rules.
  • Communicate regularly with partners via email and phone to investigate issues and propose solutions.
  • Update attorneys and staff on conflicts clearance statuses.
  • Maintain records of conflicts resolutions and responses.
  • Request waivers where necessary and confirm conflict resolutions.
  • Draft conflict waivers and engagement letters as needed.
  • Advise attorneys on complex conflict requests.
  • Implement ethical screens as required.
  • Stay informed on legal trends and conduct legal ethics and case law research.
  • Provide conflicts training to staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and experience:

Required:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, iManage, and firm applications after orientation.
  • Availability for overtime, including weekends if necessary.
  • Experience with IntApp Open, Contract Express or similar programs.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience, such as in a law firm or legal conflicts department.
  • Knowledge of ABA and California State Bar Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Understanding of corporate law practice.
  • Experience in legal and corporate research.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's Degree; JD preferred. Strong conflicts resolution experience preferred.
  • Paralegal certification or ethics course completion in a paralegal program.
  • Prior paralegal or legal research experience in a law firm.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong judgment, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional communication with attorneys, directors, and managers.
  • Ability to handle time-sensitive and ethical legal matters.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Cooley offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits, and is committed to fair employment practices. EOE.

The hourly pay range is $35.00 - $47.00 for a 40-hour workweek, equating to approximately $72,800 - $97,760 annually. Final offer depends on location, experience, and skills.
