Job summary

Norfolk Southern seeks a conductor for its operations, with on-the-job training lasting about 20 weeks at various locations. The role requires being 18+, having a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the ability to report within 90 minutes.

You will work outdoors in varying conditions, potentially 2–3 days away from home weekly, and join a union within 60 days after training. The program includes classroom and field training, with safety, hazmat, and signal rules covered.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must hold a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.
• Ability to report to work within 90 minutes.
• Clean driving record in past 36 months with no major incidents.
• Must not have been involved in diversion or probation or pleaded guilty to a drug or alcohol-related driving incident.
• Must not have refused a drug or alcohol test related to vehicle operation.
• Must pass pre-employment FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and perform coupling, drawbar alignment, hand brake application, and railcar riding.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with FRA and company safety rules.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
