Job summary

CPKC is hiring a Conductor in Mason City, Iowa. This union-position involves working with a train crew to switch rail cars and move trains in yards, with emphasis on safety and endurance in all weather. You must be 18+, hold a high school diploma or GED, and be prepared for unscheduled shifts and long hours.

The role offers growth potential into supervisory tracks, with paid training and strong adherence to GCOR. Expect outdoor work and extensive radio communication throughout shifts.

Qualifications

• Must be able to perform physically demanding work, walking up to 6 miles daily and lifting up to 80 pounds.
• Willingness to work unscheduled shifts in a 24/7 operating environment.
• Ability to work up to 12 hour shifts including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.
• Must be able to report to work within a two hour call window after scheduled rest.
• Strong focus, attention to detail and ability to multitask.
• Excellent communication skills (radio instructions and clear directions).
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions for long periods.
• Must pass required physical tasks, examinations, and understand safety rules in English.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or GED is required.

Responsibilities

• Work in train or yard service depending on seniority.
• Carry out instructions detailing a train's route and movements.
• Coordinate switching of cars and lifting out coupling device.
• Observe and relay signals affecting train movement.
• Signal crew members for engine or train movement using signals or radio.
• Follow GCOR, general orders and bulletins.
• Provide flag protection and relay signals in emergencies.
• Move on/off moving or stationary equipment.
• Complete forms and prepare reports.
• Handle emergencies and operate fire extinguishers; apply first aid.
