Position Summary
The Concrete Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and directing all field operations on commercial concrete projects from mobilization through closeout, while also serving as a Utility Superintendent for residential concrete work during gaps between commercial assignments. This dual role ensures crews, equipment, and schedules remain fully utilized across both divisions, providing flexible field leadership wherever the company’s workload demands it.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Concrete Superintendent Duties
- Plan, schedule, and supervise all phases of commercial concrete work (footings, foundations, slabs on grade, elevated decks, walls, sidewalks, light pole bases, paver bases, etc.)
- Review plans, specs, and contract documents to ensure compliance with engineering and quality standards
- Coordinate daily activities with general contractors, project managers, surveyors, and subcontractors
- Manage crew assignments, labor productivity, and daily manpower needs
- Order materials, schedule concrete pours, and coordinate ready-mix deliveries and pump trucks
- Ensure proper formwork, rebar/mesh placement, embeds, and finishing meet plans and tolerances
- Conduct daily safety meetings/toolbox talks and enforce jobsite safety and OSHA compliance
- Maintain daily reports, production logs, and track schedule/budget progress
- Perform quality control inspections and coordinate testing if required (slump, cylinder breaks, etc.) with inspectors/engineers
- Resolve field issues, RFIs, and coordinate change orders with the Sr Project Manager or Division President
Residential / Utility Superintendent Duties (Between Commercial Assignments)
- Step in as needed to supervise residential concrete crews (driveways, patios, garage slabs, foundations, flatwork, small footings)
- Provide backup supervision on multiple residential jobsites, ensuring quality and schedule adherence
- Support residential crews with layout, forming, pour coordination, and finishing oversight
- Assist with material ordering and scheduling for smaller residential-scale pours
- Fill in for absent superintendents on residential jobs to prevent schedule delays
- Maintain consistent quality and safety standards across both commercial and residential job sites
General/Cross-Functional Duties
- Serve as a flexible field resource, moving between commercial and residential jobs based on company workload and scheduling priorities
- Train, mentor, and evaluate foremen, crew leads, and laborers across both divisions
- Maintain and account for company tools, equipment, and vehicles assigned to crews
- Uphold company standards for craftsmanship, safety, and customer satisfaction on every job, regardless of size
- Communicate proactively with the office regarding schedule conflicts, weather delays, or resource needs
Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in concrete construction, including at least 2+ years in a supervisory/superintendent role
- Working knowledge of both commercial concrete practices and residential flatwork/foundation work
- Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and site plans
- Strong understanding of concrete mix designs, curing, finishing techniques, and formwork
- Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and jobsite safety practices
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple jobsites and shifting priorities
Preferred:
- OSHA 30 certification
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician certification
- Experience with scheduling software (Procore, Buildertrend, etc.)
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly
Work Environment & Schedule
- Primarily commercial jobsites, with regular reassignment to residential jobsites as workload requires
- Full-time; may require early mornings, occasional evenings/weekends to meet pour schedules or deadlines
- Must be available to shift between commercial and residential assignments with short notice
