Summary of Responsibilities
The CNC Lathe Operator/Programmer programs, sets up, operates, and tends lathe and turning machines to turn, bore, thread, form, or face metal, such as wire, rod, or bar stock. This description provides a general overview of the expected work level and nature. It is not exhaustive of all activities, duties, or responsibilities; other duties may be assigned as needed.Primary Responsibilities
- Adjusts controls to set cutting speeds, depths, and feed rates to position the tool relative to the workpiece.
- Operates the machine through its cycle, stopping to adjust tools and controls to ensure proper timing, clearance, and tolerances.
- Installs holding fixtures, cams, gears, and stops to control stock and tool movement, using hand and power tools, and measuring instruments.
- Selects cutting tools based on knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics, or based on written specifications.
- Inspects finished workpieces during operation to verify conformance with specifications, using measuring instruments.
- Studies blueprints, layouts, or charts to visualize work, determine materials, sequence operations, and identify tooling requirements.
- Determines specifications or procedures for tooling setup, workpiece dimensions, or CNC sequences, based on blueprints, instructions, and machine knowledge.
- Revises CNC programs to correct errors and retests to ensure issues are resolved.
- Modifies existing programs to improve efficiency.
- Inputs commands into the computer to store or retrieve patterns, displays, or programs, and transfers data as needed.
- Manually or mechanically lifts and positions metal stock or workpieces in the machine, securing them with fasteners and hand tools.
- Replaces worn tools, sharpens dull cutting tools and dies.
- Calculates dimensions and machine settings based on metal properties and shop mathematics.
- Mounts attachments for operations like contour duplication or trimming.
- Positions, secures, and aligns cutting tools, verifying their placement with measuring instruments.
- Feeds tools to and along the workpiece manually or automatically.
- Starts the machine and controls coolant flow or applies spinning compounds as needed.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma
- Vocational training
- At least 5 years of lathe training or hands-on experience, or a combination of both
Compensation / Pay Rate (Up to): $25.00 - $32.00
