Job summary

Instrumentation Engineer II

Job Summary

The Computer Vision Engineer will lead efforts to develop sophisticated image analysis methods and cutting-edge approaches for analyzing optical images of biological samples. This position will develop graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and implement tailored image analysis approaches to enable collaborating scientists to use these tools for each. Duties of this position also include contributing to instrument design projects, advising and assisting in developing instrument control workflows, and developing automation methods. This position will oversee day-to-day operations regarding computational workflows and analysis pipelines developed in the lab. Additional responsibilities include assisting with grant applications and scientific/technical manuscript preparation, as well as generating progress and other reports for internal and external parties. The position requires interaction with collaborating scientists to advise them on image analysis tasks or advance projects and technologies. The expected end date of this position is September 15th, 2027. This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Supports efforts to identify problems, issues and needs, and provides solution options in support of strategic decision-making
  • May supervise the daily activities of unit or program staff, identifies and facilitates staff training opportunities, and resolves routine personnel issues
  • Provides innovative expertise and experience in an area of discipline.
  • Uses universally accepted computer design applications for modeling, sophisticated analysis, and optimization of large-scale design and fabrication efforts
  • Supports or is directly responsible for efforts to coordinate project activities
  • Serves as part of a multidisciplinary team, conceptualizes, specifies, designs, constructs, integrates, operates, tests, calibrates, documents, and improves unique, large-scale instrumentation systems
  • Conducts research and development of new processes, techniques, and approaches for use in advanced instrumentation systems in collaboration with scientists and other research staff
  • Prepares reports of design status and/or technical research for professional organizations, government/sponsor review boards, and design reviews.

Compensation

The starting salary for the position is $74,154 (but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications).

Required Qualifications
  • Significant experience (>10 years) with scientific computing, image analysis, and experience in developing Machine Learning Based Image Segmentation.
  • Programing skills in MATLAB, Python, and Java
  • Experience working with light-sheet microscopy data and with sCMOS cameras.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Superior technical writing skills and the ability to work with team members from diverse scientific backgrounds.
Education

MS in Physics or Geophysics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Math
