Job summary

Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) is seeking a part-time Computer Support Specialist to assist, manage, and troubleshoot computer hardware, networks, and software across campus labs.

Under supervision, you will install, configure, and support classroom tech, assist faculty with software changes, document procedures, and participate in projects. The role requires 1–2 years of tech support experience and an associate/technical degree in technology.

Qualifications

  • Associate or Technical degree in Technology with 1–2 years of experience.
  • Preferred Bachelor's degree in related field with 1 year of experience.
  • Related experience includes progressively responsible work experience in continuous computer technical support activities.

Responsibilities

  • Represents IT, installs and services computers and related equipment for faculty and staff.
  • Implements software and hardware solutions; performs installations and upgrades.
  • Resolves network hardware and software problems and configures devices in a networked environment.
  • Consults with vendors on hardware purchases and pricing for classroom use.
  • Develops procedures and guides to troubleshoot network problems.

Under the supervision of the Director of Help Desk Services, theComputer Support Specialist supports, manages and problem solvescomputer hardware, phone network and software applications used byfaculty and students throughout the district's IT labs. Work isgenerally diversified requiring judgment, analytical skills, anddecision-making abilities, according to established practices andprocedures. Daily activities are completed independently, or aspartof a project team, employing established procedures andgeneral objectives. Interaction with the supervisor is limited toproblems or unusual situations.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  • Represents IT collaborating with District faculty and staff toperform installations, repairs, and service work on computers andassociated equipment Ensures student and faculty hardware andsoftware needs are met by determining user needs.
  • Implements and manages appropriate software and hardwaresolutions of applications used by the MATC community; performs andmaintains software installations and upgrades.
  • Assesses and resolves network hardware and software problemsincluding installation, set-up, and configuration of computerhardware and software operating in a networked environment.
  • Consults with vendors on hardware purchase orders and pricingof hardware to be used in the classrooms.
  • Develops and documents appropriate procedures, guidelines, andtechniques to pursue, track, and resolve network problems
  • Provides prompt and accurate service in response to supportrequests including evaluation and resolution of laptop, desktop,printer, phone, and tablet errors; implements repair or replacementof equipment or software.
  • Assists with the collaborating with faculty to facilitateclassroom software changes and upgrade classroom software as neededper course requirements; confers with Administration recommendingtechnical needs of classrooms and offices.
  • Assists in the research, evaluation, and implementation ofcomputer network hardware and software, and makes recommendations;coordinates related network changes with computer systemsstaff.
  • Performs systems administration and management duties for bothphysical and virtual systems including using monitoring, recording,reporting and analysis tools.
  • Performs and assists with special projects; collaborates andcommunicates the MATC community, vendors and vendor supportservices to troubleshoot network issues.
  • Creates and maintains appropriate technical, operational andtroubleshooting documentation via various media resources; supportscomputer Help Desk.
  • Plans and prepares workshops associated with the use ofcomputer equipment and software.
  • Schedules activities of computer support staff and trains newstaff and student workers assigned to the Information TechnologyHelpdesk.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, in-service training andother activities as required; attends conferences, seminars andprofessional meetings as designated.
  • Keeps current and recommends new strategies on digitaltrends.
  • Performs other related duties as required for the efficientoperations of the department.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Compliance with all state, federal, and accreditationstandards/requirements, as well as all MATC policies andprocedures.

Required Education and experience

Associate or Technicaldegree in Technology with one to two (1-2) years ofexperience.

Preferred Education and experience:

Bachelor's degree inrelated field is preferred with one (1) year of experience.

***Related experience includes: Progressively responsible workexperience in continuous computer technical supportactivities.

Preferred License/Certification :

ComptTIA A+; IT infrastructure Library (ITIL); Cisco CCNA certification or license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of currently recognized principles, techniques, andmethodologies used to support computers, phone networks, softwareand related equipment.
  • Knowledge in the following areas: VDI, Microsoft OS servers,Active Directory, management network infrastructure, data storage,backup systems.
  • Through knowledge of network transmission methods and networkcommunication protocols.
  • Working knowledge of current office practices and procedures inthe use of computer and software systems and supportingequipment.
  • Skilled at troubleshooting of hardware and software.
  • Ability to write and maintain Technical documentation andprocedures.
  • Ability to perform system administration and management dutiesfor both physical and virtual systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve technical problemsindependently and in a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective workingrelationships with students, colleagues, community representatives,and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively on sensitive issues throughboth oral and written means and to establish effective workingrelationships with administrators and staff.
  • Ability to schedule work and keep accurate records.
  • Ability to translate necessary technical information intoinstructions usable by non-technical people.
  • Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain effective workrelationships with staff and public.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse employeepopulations.
  • Ability to lift and move computer equipment weighing up toapproximately 50 pounds.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., carry, and push up to 20 lbs.and ability to pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb stairs and maintain balance.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, hear and speak.
  • Sitting/Standing/Walking: 50% of time spent sitting, 25% oftime standing, and 25% of time walking
Supplemental Information

Start Date: This position supports the InformationTechnology Department and is available starting as soon aspossible.

Hours: This position is a part-time, flexible position notto exceed 19 hours per work week. This position is based out of theDowntown Milwaukee MATC Campus, but does travel to other campusesas needed to perform essential job duties.

Salary is listed to the midpoint of the salary range and is basedon the 2025/2026 rates and are determined by years of experiencecredit and internal salary equity.
