Job summary

Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA) seeks a Computer Science/Engineering intern for our Hampton, VA location to contribute to lunar landing imagery enhancement using CNNs and ViTs. You will work with the engineering team and produce CAD drawings and reports for design reviews, with remote/onsite flexibility.

The role requires progress toward a technical degree, experience with PyTorch, CNN/ViT techniques, and programming in C/C++/Python/Julia.

  • Progress toward a degree in relevant technical fields (Physics, CS, or Engineering).
  • Working knowledge of CNNs/ViTs for image processing.
  • Applied PyTorch for image dehazing tasks.

Job description

AMA is currently accepting applications for a Computer Science/Engineering intern to support work in our Hampton, VA location.

This internship begins September 8, 2026, and concludes December 18, 2026.

Pay for this position is $23.10 - $33.50, depending on education and location.

Remote work is available.

Responsibilities
  • The intern will apply computer vision, including convolutional neural network (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs), to improve degraded imagery/video feeds during lunar landing due to plume surface interaction effects.
  • Iterate designs based on feedback from the engineering team (GN&C, mechanical, flight test, etc.).
  • Produce engineering drawings and configuration-controlled CAD packages suitable for internal design reviews.
  • Develop reports, presentations, and other documentation, providing clear comments and guidance.
  • Attend meetings, teleconferences, and workshops as needed.
  • Must be available to work at NASA Langley Research Facility in Hampton, Virginia or remotely.
Requirements
  • Progress toward a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in technical areas of relevance (Physics, computer science, or Engineering).
  • Working knowledge and application of CNNs/ViTs to image dehazing using PyTorch.
  • Working knowledge of PSI scattering physics.
  • Programming experience in C/C++, Python, Julia.
  • Presentation skills, including creating and sharing PowerPoint presentations clearly exhibiting the design requirements, layout, and plan forward.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, able to articulate design choices to a team of engineers and project management personnel and create clear assembly instructions.
  • Must have US citizenship or permanent US residency (due to ITAR/EAR restrictions).
  • Must be available to work at NASA Langley Research Facility in Hampton, Virginia or remotely.
