Job Description

University of Saint Joseph invites qualified applicants to serve as part-time adjunct faculty within the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. The department is actively recruiting adjunct faculty for the Fall 2026 semester to teach on-campus, in-person sections of the following course:

COMP117: Innovation and Technology (3 credits)
Section 01: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 8:00-8:50 a.m., from 8/26/2025 to 12/02/2026
Section 02: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 2:00-2:50 p.m., from 8/26/2025 to 12/02/2026

Catalog description: A survey course intended to introduce the role of technology in promoting and sustaining organizational innovation using an interdisciplinary approach. This is an important part of engineering, computer science, and business training. In this course students will learn the connection between innovation and problem solving, the legal and ethical responsibilities of innovation with technology, the 8-step problem solving/design method, the four types of innovation (basic research, breakthrough innovation, sustaining innovation, and disruptive innovation), the business of innovation, and an overview of innovative technologies. Topics include: Innovation and ethics, AI, IoT, augmented reality, virtual reality, blockchain, 5G communication, 3D printing, Spreadsheets and Databases, Big Data, nanotechnology, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and hyper-personalization. Materials will be drawn from the disciplines of business, computer science, engineering, ethics, science fiction, law, and education.

COMP117 is a general education course that satisfies the university competency requirement in Information Technology and attracts students from a wide range of majors. One of the important goals is to spark students’ interest in computing and introduce them to the opportunities offered by the Computer Science program.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Teach 3 credits designated as contact time with the students.
  • Prepare lectures, projects, homework, assessments, and other student assignments that align with the course syllabus.
  • Grade all student assignments in a timely manner. Provide appropriate feedback to students to promote academic success.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours; Adjunct must be available a minimum of one additional hour per week, either in-person or virtually, to provide support to students.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the current methods and practices for teaching college-level courses; present qualified and clear instruction related to the course subject.
  • Learn and utilize technology offered at USJ to facilitate teaching.
  • Meet all designated class periods in the semester as dictated by the academic calendar.
  • Submit mid-semester and final grades to the Registrar’s Office within required timeframes, leave all course records with the department chairperson upon completion of the course.
  • Provide a supportive atmosphere for student success.
Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field. Degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Additional qualifications include: advanced spreadsheet skills, programming experience in Python and Scratch, knowledge of basic computer architecture, HTML/CSS experience, and AI prompt engineering.
  • Commitment to the University of Saint Joseph mission.
  • Prior teaching experience strongly preferred.
Additional Information:
  • Teaching assignments are part-time, on a semester basis only and are dependent on student enrollment and department needs.
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability towards the performance of job duties.
  • Compensation ranges from $3000 to $3700 per course, based on experience and qualifications.
