Job summary

City of North Port is seeking a specialized technical investigator to perform forensic analysis and data extraction for criminal investigations. The role emphasizes preservation, secure handling of evidence, and collaboration with multiple agencies.

You will document findings in official reports, assist with trial preparation, and may testify in legal matters. Candidates with IACIS CFCE or Celebrite certifications are preferred; law enforcement experience is a plus.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with at least one year experience in computer forensics.
• Law enforcement experience preferred; certifications recommended within 24 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough and documented preservation, extraction, and analysis of devices in support of Criminal Investigations.
• Manage evidence logs with accuracy and integrity.
• Assess crime scenes, both physical and digital, and assist with execution of search warrants.
• Identify, collect, inventory, and store evidence items in a secure manner.
• Conduct forensic examinations of various media.
• Document procedures and findings in official police reports and assist with trial preparation.
• Testify in criminal or civil matters in state or federal jurisdiction.
• Liaise with outside governmental, educational, and non-profit agencies as needed.
• Assist with school presentations and traveler operations related to on-site camera surveillance and forensics.
• Support human trafficking investigations.

This is a specialized technical work conducting thorough analysis in conjunction with the Criminal Investigations Unit. Conducts numerous investigations that require the preservation, extraction, and analysis of data from electronic devices.

• Conducting thorough and documented preservation, extraction, and analysis of devices in support of Criminal Investigations.
• Manages evidence logs.
• Assess crime scenes, both physical and digital, and assists with the execution of search warrants of either.
• Identifies, collects, inventories, and stores evidence items in a secure manner.
• Conducts forensic examinations of various media.
• Documents procedure and findings in official police reports. Collects items of evidence for analysis from affiliates and local agents. Assists with trial preparation.
• Testifies in criminal or civil matters, in state or federal jurisdiction.
• Acts as liaison to outside related governmental, educational and non-profit agencies.
• Assists with school presentations.
• Assists with traveler operations, specific to on-site camera surveillance and forensics.
• Assists with human trafficking investigations.

• Knowledge and understanding of search warrant language and how to gain authority.
• Knowledge of how to conduct consent-based searches, and associated authority, scope, and restrictions.
• Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing, and to make accurate, factual, concise well-organized reports and presentations.

Physical Activities:

The work is light: exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Additional requirements include: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

(Occasional=1-3 Hrs; Frequent=3-5 Hrs; Constant=5-8 Hrs – Per Workday)

Education and Experience:

• High school degree or equivalent with at least one (1) year experience in computer forensics.
• Law enforcement experience preferred.
• IACIS and CFCE preferred. Must obtain within twenty-four (24) months of hire.
• Celebrite CCO and CCPA preferred. Must be obtained within twenty-four (24) months of hire.

(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
