Job summary

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Computational Beamline Scientist to help deploy and optimize data workflows for LCLS, integrating AI and LLM-based approaches into daily operations. You will work with scientists and software engineers to design usable interfaces and robust data processing patterns.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, science, or related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience in software or data analysis for scientific applications.
  • Strong knowledge of software development life cycle and quality control practices.
  • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use programming methods.
  • Operational experience with scientific AI-based algorithms and frameworks, including LLMs.
  • Excellent communication with both technical and non-technical clients.
  • Demonstrated experience leading collaborative coding projects.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, develop, implement, modify, and maintain algorithms and pipelines to analyze scientific data generated by LCLS.
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain data analysis workflows for day-to-day facility operations.
  • Interface with external collaborators and users, providing technical support for LCLS software and hardware resources.
  • Support the development of new ML data analysis approaches focused on usability for beamline scientists.
  • Assist users in running self-developed data analysis software within the LCLS software framework.
  • Debug and document computer applications to meet users' needs.
  • Observe and optimize software resource usage, including training users.
  • Ensure effective communication and information flow to diverse audiences.
  • Build relationships to foster trust, collaboration, and a positive climate.
  • Promote a culture of safety and compliance with university policies.
