Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory – SSRL seeks a Head of Data, Compute, Automation, and AI to lead a facility-wide program across data handling, compute access, and workflow integration. You will guide a multidisciplinary team, coordinate with SSRL leadership, and collaborate with DOE initiatives and national platforms to advance experimental and accelerator workflows.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Master's or PhD preferred) in a relevant field such as physics, chemistry, materials science, computer science, engineering, or related discipline.
• Experience leading technical teams and delivering complex projects in scientific or data-intensive environments.
• Strong background in scientific research or computational/data systems with interface to computing infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate facility-wide data, compute, automation, and workflow integration initiatives.
• Build, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary team across data architecture, software engineering, controls/automation, and compute integration.
• Develop and deploy shared solutions for metadata capture, data organization, workflow orchestration, and analysis tools for both experiments and accelerator use cases.
• Align SSRL priorities with division leadership and ensure collaboration with SSRL staff and computing teams.
• Represent SSRL in DOE computing initiatives and national platforms (ASCR, American Science Cloud).
• Oversee automation and real-time feedback workflows to improve experimental efficiency.
