Job description

We are seeking an experienced Component Engineer to support Reality Labs hardware products. The Component Engineer will own the technical qualification, sourcing, and supply-risk management of electrical, electromechanical, and optoelectronic components across hardware products.

This role serves as the technical bridge between Electrical Engineering (EE), Global Supply Management (GSM)/Strategic Sourcing, Contract Manufacturers (CMs), and component suppliers, ensuring components are properly qualified, multi-sourced where possible, and managed for supply, cost, quality, and reliability throughout NPI and sustaining.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review, qualify, and approve electrical, electromechanical, and optoelectronic components, including resistors, capacitors, ICs, connectors, discretes, inductors, filters, timing devices, PCB/FPC, camera/optics, display, and battery modules.
  • Execute second-source and multi-source qualification activities to reduce supply risk, mitigate EOL, allocation, lead-time, and PCN-related shortages, and support cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Determine component criticality and define appropriate qualification paths in partnership with EE reviewers.
  • Manage New Part Requests (NPRs) and maintain qualified manufacturer part numbers (MPNs) within AVL, PLM, and CBOM systems.
  • Execute Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and track Product/Process Change Notifications (PCNs) across NPI and sustaining products.
  • Perform and/or support component up-screening, derating, qualification, reliability assessments, and component-level failure analysis.
  • Lead advanced BOM risk reviews to identify component issues early and maintain EE BOM integrity across the hardware portfolio.
  • Partner with GSM/Strategic Sourcing and Product Cost Engineering teams as the technical counterpart for critical components.
  • Support Contract Manufacturers with component-related technical inquiries, qualification requirements, and shortage escalations.
  • Work directly with component suppliers and manufacturing partners across global regions.
  • Leverage AI and data-mining tools to analyze component data, identify trends and risks, and develop engineering guidelines that enable data-driven decisions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in component engineering, hardware engineering, supplier quality, or supply-chain engineering.
  • Strong working knowledge of passive and active electronic components, component datasheets, and qualification/reliability methodologies.
  • Experience with up-screening, derating, failure analysis, and component qualification.
  • Hands-on experience with PLM systems such as Teamcenter or Agile.
  • Experience managing AVL, BOM/CBOM, ECN, and PCN processes.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
