Job summary

SGS Consulting in Springfield, IL is seeking a Trade Compliance Specialist to manage regulatory requirements across import and export activities.

You will classify goods, oversee documents for customs clearance, and coordinate with brokers to ensure timely shipments.

The role requires 3–5 years of experience, a relevant degree, and knowledge of EAR, ITAR, OFAC; SAP experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Business, International Trade, Supply Chain, or a related field.
• 3–5 years of trade compliance or import/export experience in manufacturing.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. trade regulations (CBP, BIS) and customs documentation.
• Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) or CUSECO certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Stay current on trade regulations including EAR, ITAR, and OFAC.
• Assign HTS and ECCN codes for goods and technology.
• Prepare and review invoices, packing lists, and origin certificates.
• Coordinate daily import/export activities with brokers and forwarders.
• Serve as primary contact for brokers and carriers.
• Conduct internal audits to validate compliance and recordkeeping.
• Screen third parties against restricted party lists.
• Support FTAs and duty drawback programs to reduce costs.
• Provide training on trade compliance to cross-functional teams.
• Contribute to projects that automate compliance processes.

Job Responsibilities

• Regulatory Compliance: Stay current on and ensure adherence to trade regulations, including EAR, ITAR, and OFAC sanctions.
• Classification: Assign accurate HTS and ECCN codes for goods, components, and technology.
• Documentation: Prepare and review commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin for timely customs clearance.
• Shipment Oversight: Coordinate daily import/export activities with freight forwarders and customs brokers, resolving issues promptly.
• Broker Management: Serve as the main point of contact for customs brokers and carriers.
• Audits: Conduct internal audits to validate compliance and proper recordkeeping.
• Risk Mitigation: Screen third parties against restricted and denied party lists.
• Duty Optimization: Support programs such as FTAs and duty drawback claim to reduce costs.
• Training: Provide compliance training and guidance to cross-functional teams (procurement, engineering, sales).
• Process Improvement: Contribute to projects aimed at automating and strengthening trade compliance practices.
