Job summary

State Road Animal Hospital in Elkin, NC, is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians with patient care, exams, and surgeries. The role involves taking histories, vital signs, preparing patients, and assisting with in-hospital lab work.

You will communicate with clients, monitor hospitalized pets, maintain supplies, and help ensure a compassionate, efficient clinic environment. Weekend availability and basic math, computer skills, and PPE adherence are important.

Qualifications

• Weekend work availability is required.
• Previous veterinary experience preferred.
• Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; assist with heavier lifts.
• Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE.
• Basic math and the ability to calculate medication dosages.
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with MS Office applications.
• Strong communication skills to ensure patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
• Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, and providing client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs during surgery.
• Obtain samples; perform in-hospital lab tests and prepare specimens.
• Take, develop and maintain radiographs following safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain during exams.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments as directed.
• Clean and restock exam rooms and maintain equipment; support team to keep areas clean.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients and patients.
