Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Alabama teaching certificate in special education.
  • Suitability criteria for employment/certification under Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum for assigned students.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Technology use to communicate, plan instruction, manage data, and prepare reports.
  • Physical strength and stamina to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to stand, walk, assist with toileting and hygiene needs.
  • Ability to transfer, feed, and provide physical intervention when required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives as the Board may require.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system's vision, goals and priorities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of child development and characteristics of special education students.
  • Assesses students' needs for transition and related services.
  • Participates in development of students' IEPs and implements them.
  • Schedules and participates in IEP meetings.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies suited to individual needs.
  • Monitors progress and adjusts curriculum and instruction as needed.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Provides crisis intervention when required and follows approved procedures.
  • Works with peers, parents, admins and staff to maximize student achievement.
  • Creates long-range instructional plans aligned with curriculum priorities.
  • Defines goals for daily lesson plans and learning outcomes.
  • Selects and adapts materials to meet students' needs.
  • Maintains organization of learning environments.
  • Interprets data for diagnosis and program evaluation.
  • Communicates student progress to students, parents and colleagues.
  • Maintains test environments and adheres to testing integrity.
  • Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student/school/workplace matters.
  • Engages in professional growth and demonstrates ethics and leadership.
  • Participates in state and district evaluations and testing as required.
  • Supervises students during assigned times and during extracurricular activities.
