Job summary

ACMH INC in Manhattan, NY seeks a Peer Counselor for Residential Crisis Support (Respite) at Independence House. Lived experience with mental health services is required; duties include supporting guests, promoting coping skills, and assisting with daily living activities.

Responsibilities include monitoring medications, providing safety training, and leading wellness and peer support groups while coordinating crisis response and recovery planning.

Qualifications

• Lived experience of using mental health services and a commitment to recovery.
• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Good written and verbal communication in English.
• Basic computer and data entry skills are required.
• Must be provisionally certified or credentialed as NYS Peer Advocate titles (FPA/CRPA/YPA/Peer Specialist).

Responsibilities

• Act as a role model, provide empathy and support to guests.
• Regularly assess guests’ functional skills and safety.
• Assist with daily living activities and meal preparation.
• Monitor medication adherence and side-effects.
• Provide safety training, fire drills and self-preservation checks.
• Deliver health and wellness coaching and coping strategies.
• Lead peer support groups and wellness sessions.
• Provide transportation training and accompany guests to appointments.
