The Field Supervisor supports students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)/Alternative Certification Program (ACP) at Lamar University by observing, coaching, and mentoring teacher candidates in their first year of teaching. The Supervisor ensures that each candidate is evaluated using the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) rubric and POP (pre-observation, observation, post-observation) cycle model and collaborates with mentor teachers and school administrators to support candidate development. Field Supervisors are assigned to specific geographic regions across Texas and serve as key representatives of Lamar University's College of Education and Human Development.

Essential Job Functions

Observe, Coach, and Evaluate Teacher Candidates

  • Conduct formal and informal classroom observations of MAT/ACP candidates using the T-TESS rubric.
  • Implement and document the POP cycle (pre-conference, observation, and post-conference) for each candidate.
  • Provide constructive feedback and coaching aligned with state educator standards.

Support Candidate Development Through Mentoring and Consultation

  • Mentor MAT/ACP candidates to ensure instructional growth and classroom management effectiveness.
  • Address candidate concerns, guide professional reflection, and provide support aligned with program expectations.
  • Maintain regular communication with candidates and provide guidance throughout Internship I and II.

Build and Maintain Partnerships with Schools and Mentors

  • Establish and sustain professional relationships with mentor teachers, school administrators, and district personnel within assigned geographic area (e.g., Houston, DFW, San Antonio).
  • Represent Lamar University professionally and maintain strong community engagement.

Maintain Accurate and Timely Documentation

  • Upload POP cycle data, observation records, and walk-through data into university-required data systems.
  • Ensure all documentation meets program, state, and university standards for field experience reporting.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Texas Teaching Certification (EC6, 48, 712, or EC12 content areas).
  • Minimum of five years of experience in the field of certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor or supervise novice teachers.
  • Familiarity with T-TESS and Texas educator evaluation standards.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a school administrator, instructional coach, or teacher mentor.
  • Knowledge of educator preparation standards and the Texas T-TESS evaluation system.
  • Skill in observing instruction and providing high-quality written and verbal feedback.
  • Skill in building rapport and maintaining professional relationships with school personnel.
  • Skill in using technology to document and submit evaluations.
  • Ability to work independently while managing a caseload across geographically dispersed areas.
  • Ability to coach and support novice teachers during their critical first year of teaching.
Physical Requirements

Able to lift 25 pounds and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing, and walking between buildings.

Job Conditions
  • This is a part-time, field-based position with flexible hours aligned to school schedules.
  • The position requires travel across a designated area in Texas and may include extended driving.
  • This position is security-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code 51.215.
  • Strict adherence to university and Texas educator code of ethics policies is required.
  • A violation of program or university policy may result in disciplinary action or termination.
