COMMUNITY SYSTEMS PLANT OPERATOR APPRENTICE

Loudoun Water, located in Ashburn, VA, is a public utility that provides water and wastewater services to customers in Loudoun County. We offer highly competitive salaries, a stable work environment, and excellent employee benefits.

We are seeking a Community Systems Plant Operator Apprentice who will assist with operating and maintaining water, wastewater, and on-site treatment facilities, along with their associated distribution and collection systems. Essential functions include:

  1. Reading, interpreting, and executing all facility and department requirements, including adherence to all Operations and Maintenance Manuals, regulatory permits, and Loudoun Water Standard Operating Procedures.
  2. Conducting basic inspection procedures, general housekeeping, and preventive maintenance on the facility’s equipment, building, and grounds. Ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and determine proper remedial measures, including making general repairs and adjustments as needed.
  3. Operating valves, pumps, gates, and other controls and equipment within the facility and associated with the treatment process. This includes exercising associated distribution system valves.
  4. Reading meters, gauges, and dials; recording readings, chemical levels, water properties, and statistical data; preparing and maintaining a variety of operational logs and records, including computer spreadsheets and facility databases.
  5. Collecting water and wastewater samples; performing bench testing or submitting samples to laboratories for testing; maintaining records of findings and sample characteristics; calibrating test equipment; cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  6. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Requirements: High school graduate (or equivalent). Strong math skills or an interest in science, biology, or chemistry is a plus. Experience in operation and maintenance of water, wastewater, and/or water reclamation facilities is preferred but not required.

Special Requirements: Ability to obtain at least one of the following licenses within two years: Virginia State Class 4 or above Wastewater Works Operator License, Virginia Class 4 or above Waterworks Operator License, or Virginia Alternative Onsite Sewage System Operator License. Possession of a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Ability to obtain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within six months of employment. This position works on a non-call schedule and may require overtime to fulfill responsibilities. It is deemed essential per the LW staffing policy and requires working during inclement weather or emergencies.
