Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Administer and score the Texas Assessment Risk System (TRAS) interviews.
- Maintain a caseload of misdemeanor and felony cases in accordance with CJAD, Department, and Court requirements.
- Monitor offender compliance with court orders through routine office and field contacts to ensure community safety.
- Assist offenders in locating services needed to promote pro‑social, law‑abiding behavior.
- Utilize an Evidence Based Practices (EBP) approach to provide information, establish rapport, and create a collaborative tone with probationers.
- Apply the department’s progressive sanctions and incentives model, reinforcing pro‑social behavior and affirming positive efforts of probationers.
- Refer probationers to appropriate programs and resources.
- Conduct assessments and develop individualized case supervision plans, including Chronos that incorporate primary domains indicated by the TRAS and the problem statement.
- Review probationers’ fee collection status regularly.
- Ensure case‑file documents and records are scanned into the Case Management System (CSS).
- Conduct orientation and intake with new probationers.
- Report violations of probation to the appropriate authorities in a timely manner.
- Transport offenders in accordance with Department policy, procedures, or pursuant to a lawful court order.
- Create and maintain case records that chronologically document all significant actions, decisions, services rendered, assessments, re‑assessments, pre‑sentence investigations, periodic evaluations, and written criminal history.
- Maintain confidentiality; treat PSI (pre‑sentence investigation) reports and related information as confidential and release only to persons authorized by law and directed by the court.
- Ensure medical and psychiatric records obtained by the court are sealed or kept separate from offenders’ case files; release such information only by court order.
- Communicate effectively with hostile, abusive, or irrational individuals.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, County employees, and the general public.
- Contribute to team effort by completing other related duties as needed.
Knowledge
- Proficient in TRAS, completion of TAIP evaluation, and PSI.
- Exceptional case management and interview skills.
- General knowledge of supervision practices, procedures, and evidence‑based practices (EBP) approach to probation.
- General knowledge of the department’s progressive sanctions model.
- Working knowledge of CSS.
Minimum Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree conferred by an institution of higher education accredited by an accrediting organization recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The degree should be in criminal justice. The candidate must be able to become certified by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Community Justice Assistance Division (TDCJ‑CJAD) within the first year of employment as an officer, and become TRAS certified within the first year.
