Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated salary hiring range is $3,461 - $3,601 per month (Steps 1 – 3), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The full salary range for this classification is $3,461 - $5,043 per month.
This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental, and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Eligible employees are also able to participate in the fee‑waiver education program.

Job Summary

Community Service Specialists are uniformed, non‑sworn employees who provide a variety of public relations, technical, clerical, security, and enforcement‑related functions. Under the general supervision of the Parking & Transportation Manager and/or a Lieutenant, and under the lead of a Community Service Specialist II, the incumbent will support the mission of the University, the Fresno State Police Department and the Traffic Operations division.

Typical Work Assignments
  • Security Services: Patrolling campus on foot, bike, or vehicle to protect the campus community from hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing and other crimes; checking, opening and securing campus facilities; and coordinating and testing campus alarm systems.
  • Parking Support: Ensuring parking compliance through issuing and selling parking permits, patrolling parking lots, issuing citations for parking and other standing violations, directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic during peak hours, special events and emergencies, assisting with processing revenues related to the Parking and Transportation programs, and assisting with alternative transportation programs.
  • Campus Community Support: Assisting with the physical logistics of campus special events and emergencies; providing general information, customer service, and assistance to the public; performing all customer service duties at the Parking Customer Service Office as directed; providing escort and citizen assistance; and providing transportation for persons with disabilities.
Key Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of applicable university policies and procedures, methods, practices, and terminology used in public safety communications and ability to learn applicable public safety equipment and systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work a rotational schedule (day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts).
  • Ability to detect and respond appropriately to potential hazardous or crime situations, observe and recall details and incidents, and act and resolve parking and traffic problems.
  • Ability to write standard incident reports clearly and concisely, handle sensitive situations with tact, perform simple arithmetic computations, read and write at an appropriate level, establish priorities and determine deadlines, learn and understand policies and procedures, understand and carry out written and oral instructions, assist students, staff, faculty and the general public by providing information, work independently under general supervision, establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students and staff from diverse backgrounds, and learn and effectively use various police department communication platforms.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three to six months of directly related work experience performing similar duties.
  • Possession of a valid class “C” California Driver’s License and a demonstrated good driving record.
  • A history of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of experience performing parking and/or traffic control functions.
  • Knowledge of computer office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems and software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, Google apps).
  • Proficient in the use of two‑way radio communication.
