Job summary

Henry Street Settlement is hiring for a Program Assistant to support the P.S. 142 Community School program on the Lower East Side. The role involves day-to-day program coordination, data management, family engagement, and running morning activities and recess clubs.

The position requires youth development experience, strong communication, and the ability to manage a food pantry and participate in school-wide activities. In-person work with a dedicated team is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning and delivery of academic and enrichment activities and events.

  • Track attendance and performance through data entry and recordkeeping.
  • Conduct outreach to families and communicate with the School Director about needs.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Manage daily operations of the school food pantry, including ordering and stocking supplies.
  • Coordinate weekly distributions and maintain inventory and records.
  • Oversee logistics for deliveries, distributions, and volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Program Overview:

Education and Employment Services is an $ 8.2 million division serving about 9000 people each year through a continuum of services from Early Childhood Education through Adult Workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. Education Services include an Early Learn Program, After School Programs (7 sites), 6 Day Camps, Athletics, Community Schools, Expanded Horizons College Success Program, and our Youth Opportunity Hub. Programming takes place within 3 community center sites and multiple school-based programs. Employment Services include walk-in employment services, employment services for a public housing population, ESL job readiness training, and employment services for youth, including SYEP and Young Adult Internship and Adult Literacy Programs.

Job Summary:

The Program Assistant will report to the Community School Director at P.S. 142. They will be responsible for assisting with the day-to-day management of the P.S. 142 Community School program and facilitating groups. This will include assisting with data management, event planning, family engagement, and running morning programs and recess clubs. In addition, the Program Assistant serves as the primary manager for the P.S. 142 Free Bodega (food pantry).

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of academic and enrichment activities and special events.
  • Assist with orders and purchases of materials and supplies to support and enrich program activities/initiatives.
  • Track attendance and performance through accurate recordkeeping and data entry/database management duties.
  • Conduct outreach to families.
  • Communicate with the Community School Director about family and student needs.
  • Serve as a member of the school attendance team and conduct attendance outreach to families.
  • Model appropriate communication with families, teachers, staff and students.
  • Collaborating with school staff and leadership to align program with school culture and norms.
  • Collaborating with staff at other Henry Street Settlement programs.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Manage daily operations of the school's food pantry, including ordering, donations, deliveries, stocking, organization, and maintenance of food, clothing, hygiene and household supplies.
  • Coordinate weekly distributions, track inventory and participation, maintain records, and collaborate with school staff and partners to meet community needs.
  • Oversee logistics for deliveries, seasonal distributions, and volunteers to ensure the school food pantry remains organized, fully stocked, and operational year-round.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Essential Physical Job Functions:
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and follow through skills.
  • Flexible and positive team-oriented attitude.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
