Job description

San Francisco Parent Coalition (SF Parents) is seeking a bilingual Spanish-English Community Organizer to build parent power through school-based organizing, leadership development, and advocacy. The role supports both SF Parent Coalition and SF Parent Action, helping families engage in campaigns and civic action to improve public education.

This is a field-based position requiring frequent in-person work throughout San Francisco, often daily. The organizer will build relationships with families at schools, community events, and parent gatherings, with a particular focus on engaging and developing Spanish-speaking parent leaders. Professional fluency in Spanish and English is required.

We're looking for someone who enjoys connecting with families, takes initiative, follows through, and believes in the power of parents to create change.

The Community Organizer reports to the Director of Advocacy & Organizing and receives ongoing coaching and support.

About SF Parents Coalition

San Francisco Parent Coalition centers the needs of children and youth in San Francisco public schools by bringing together a diverse network of parents and caregivers to advocate for a thriving, equitable school system. We connect and empower parents across San Francisco by helping families understand the school system, build relationships with decision-makers, and develop the skills to advocate for their children and communities.

We believe all students deserve access to excellent, equitable public schools and meaningful opportunities to thrive.

What You’ll Do Community Organizing & School-Based Outreach (45%)
  • Build strong relationships with parents and caregivers, with a particular focus on engaging Spanish-speaking families.
  • Conduct regular in-person outreach at schools, community events, and neighborhood gatherings throughout San Francisco.
  • Support organizing at an assigned portfolio of schools, building relationships and identifying opportunities for parent engagement.
  • Conduct meaningful one-on-one conversations with parents to understand their experiences, concerns, and interests. Build toward approximately 10–12 parent conversations per week.
  • Recruit and follow up with parents in Spanish and English, helping families move from initial contact to ongoing involvement.
  • Track outreach, parent relationships, and engagement in organizational systems, and share insights with the organizing team.
Parent Leadership Development (25%)
  • Identify and recruit parents interested in taking on leadership roles in their schools and communities.
  • Support School Leads, Parent Leadership Teams (PLTs), the Parent Leadership Council (PLC), and other parent leadership opportunities.
  • Help build a connected network of Spanish-speaking parent leaders across San Francisco schools.
  • Coach parents to take on meaningful responsibilities, including recruiting families, leading meetings, sharing their experiences, and participating in advocacy.
  • Support parent leadership development through ongoing relationship-building, coaching, and follow-up.
Campaigns, Advocacy & Civic Engagement (20%)
  • Support SF Parent Coalition and SF Parent Action campaigns, advocacy, and civic engagement activities.
  • Gather parent perspectives through conversations and listening sessions to help inform organizing and campaign priorities.
  • Recruit and prepare parents to participate in school board meetings, community forums, advocacy activities, and mobilizations.
  • Support voter education, voter engagement, and other SF Parent Action activities, as assigned and consistent with applicable legal requirements.
  • Work with the organizing and advocacy team to connect parent concerns to opportunities for collective action.
Workshops, Events & Community Engagement (10%)
  • Help plan, recruit for, and coordinate parent workshops, trainings, community meetings, and organizing events.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate meetings and workshops in Spanish and English.
  • Conduct targeted outreach to engage families who are often underrepresented in education decision-making.
  • Follow up with participants to build relationships and connect them to ongoing organizing and leadership opportunities.
How You'll Do It

You build genuine relationships. You enjoy connecting with parents, listening to their experiences, and building trust over time. You follow through and help families find meaningful ways to get involved.

You're comfortable in the community. You enjoy meeting new people, showing up at schools and community events, and engaging families in both Spanish and English.

You take initiative and stay organized. You can manage your time, prioritize responsibilities, track your work, and follow through on commitments without needing constant direction.

You help parents become leaders. You see the potential in others and enjoy helping parents build confidence, develop skills, and take action on issues that matter to them.

You're collaborative and eager to learn. You work well with others, welcome feedback, and are curious about public education and the issues affecting San Francisco families. You bring cultural awareness, humility, and a commitment to educational equity.

Qualifications & Skills Required
  • Professional working fluency in Spanish and English, including the ability to independently conduct outreach, parent conversations, and meetings in both languages.
  • Experience in community organizing, outreach, parent engagement, or related work. Relevant volunteer, community leadership, and lived experience will also be considered.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills, with the ability to connect with families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability and willingness to conduct frequent in-person outreach throughout San Francisco, often daily, and reliably travel between school and community locations.
  • Strong organizational skills, initiative, and ability to work independently, collaborate with a team, and follow through on commitments.
  • Flexibility to work occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends to meet families when they are available.
  • Commitment to educational equity and parent leadership, with a willingness to learn, grow, and receive feedback.
Preferred
  • 1–2 years of relevant paid or volunteer organizing experience.
  • Experience working with Spanish-speaking families and Latino communities.
  • Experience engaging parents, caregivers, or school communities.
  • Familiarity with San Francisco neighborhoods, public schools, and community organizations.
  • Experience recruiting, supporting, or developing parent or community leaders.
  • Experience facilitating meetings, small groups, or workshops.
  • Familiarity with community organizing, civic engagement, education advocacy, or issue-based campaigns.
  • Experience using databases, spreadsheets, or other tools to track outreach and relationships.
Work Location & Schedule

This is a field-based, hybrid position requiring regular in-person work throughout San Francisco. The Community Organizer will spend significant time at schools, connecting with families, attending community events, and supporting SF Parent Coalition and SF Parent Action activities.

Because engaging parents often means working outside traditional business hours, the role requires flexibility to attend early morning, evening, and occasional weekend meetings and events. We support flexible scheduling to balance these commitments.

The position also includes team collaboration, planning, and administrative responsibilities. However, this is not a primarily remote or desk-based role. Building relationships and maintaining a consistent presence in the community are central to the work.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range: $72,000-78,000 depending on experience.
  • SF Parent Coalition covers 100% of employee medical, dental premiums and contributes 50% toward dependent coverage.
  • Paid holidays, organizational closure periods, and generous PTO.
  • Ongoing professional development, organizing training, and coaching.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven team committed to improving San Francisco public education.
