Conservation Legacy is seeking a Community Assistance Fellow – AmeriCorps to support a schoolyard greening project in Los Angeles and the broader Southern California area. Purpose

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the NPS Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program (NPS-RTCA) will host a Community Assistance Fellow.

The National Park Service – Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program (NPS-RTCA) supports locally-led conservation and outdoor recreation projects across the United States. NPS-RTCA assists communities and public land managers in developing or restoring parks, conservation areas, rivers, and wildlife habitats, as well as creating outdoor recreation opportunities and programs that engage future generations in the outdoors. NPS-RTCA has provided technical assistance at three elementary schools in Los Angeles in the past five years.

This AmeriCorps position will focus primarily on schoolyard greening outreach and support will expand NPS-RTCA’s capacity and enable it to better serve our project partners, and to continue providing technical assistance in the Southern California area and beyond.

The primary focus of the AmeriCorps position will be to provide support to an ongoing schoolyard greening project in Los Angeles, as well as to support staff in developing an outreach strategy and in finding future projects. The expected outcomes of the position will be the completion of a current schoolyard greening concept plan and the development of an outreach strategy for the Los Angeles area.

Description of Duties

Support staff with outreach and engagement, site analysis, attending and facilitating meetings, communication with project partners, schematic design, graphic communication and project presentations, related to schoolyard greening, outdoor recreation and health related community assistance projects.

This position will be hybrid with the ability to combine local teleservice with occasional in-person meetings at NPS offices or local project sites. The fellow will be expected to provide their own transportation to and from work locations or use public transportation.

Qualifications

• Experience in landscape architecture, planning or closely related field.
• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• At least 17 years of age
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Time Requirements

• This full-time position is expected to serve typical business hours, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
• Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training

• Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

• Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395.00
• Living Allowance of $600.00 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
