Job summary

County of Maui is seeking a Communications Support Technician to provide technical support and maintenance for computer systems hardware, software, radio equipment, and department networks. The role includes data input/output, inventory, testing, and repair responsibilities across multiple devices and components.

The position requires a high school diploma with 3 years of relevant experience, a Hawaii driver’s license, and the ability to troubleshoot and install components.

Qualifications

  • Combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of responsible work experience with PCs and various applications.
  • Valid Hawaii State driver’s license (Type 3) required and must be maintained.
  • Knowledge of computer system operation and radio/electronics principles.
  • Ability to set up and operate computers and peripherals; identify malfunctions; install and troubleshoot components; and follow directions.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, operates, and monitors department computer hardware, software, radio equipment, and related communications equipment.
  • Maintains and operates reporting software with assistance of County ITSD.
  • Troubleshoots, conducts minor repairs, tests, installs, and modifies radio equipment.
  • Reviews reports and provides requested data (e.g., incidents, costs) and responds to public information requests under UIPA.
  • Conducts inventory, tracking, ordering, and scheduling of repairs and replacements for hardware, software, and radio equipment.
  • Acts as a liaison between the department, ITSD support, and radio maintenance vendor.
  • May participate in training of computer/radio users and other personnel.
  • May operate a department issued vehicle to attend meetings and pick up/drop off equipment.

Job description

Under general supervision, participates in providing technical support and maintenance for computer systems hardware and software, radio equipment, department networks, and performs other related duties as required.

This class is distinguished by its participation in providing technical support and maintenance to computer systems and radio equipment, fire reporting software, input and output of data, inventory, testing, and repair and replacement of hardware, software, radio equipment, and department networks.

(The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.)

  • Installs, operates, and monitors department computer hardware, software, radio equipment, and related communications equipment.
  • Maintains and operates reporting software application with assistance of County ITSD.
  • Troubleshoots, conducts minor repairs, tests, installs, and modifies radio equipment.
  • Recommends or performs troubleshooting and corrective actions to communication system operations.
  • Reviews reports and provides requested data (i.e. # of incidents, costs, etc.)
  • Responds to public request for information and tracks requested reports in compliance with the Uniform Information Practice Act (UIPA).
  • Conducts inventory, tracking, ordering, and scheduling of repairs and replacements of hardware, software, radio equipment, and related communications equipment for the Department.
  • Acts as a liaison between the department, ITSD support, and the radio maintenance vendor.
  • Processes budgetary replacement plans for radio systems and computer systems by way of procurement procedure.
  • May participate in training of computer/ radio users and other personnel
  • Assists system administrators in overall system management.
  • May be called upon to assist with communication equipment in an emergency.
  • May operate a department issued vehicle to attend meetings and pick up/ drop off equipment.

This is the first specification approved for the class, COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT TECHNICIAN, effective November 1, 2019.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of responsible work experience that involved the use of personal computers and a variety of applications (e.g., word processing, electronic mail, spreadsheet, data base management), and included the installation of software applications, and the installation and repair of computers and peripheral equipment (e.g., printers, modems, disk drives, etc.)

License Requirement: Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3). (Valid license must be maintained on a current basis thereafter).

Knowledge of: Principles and techniques of computer system operation; the components of an electronic computer and their operation and function; principles of radio communications and electronics; operation and capabilities of a variety of types of radio, computer and electronic equipment, techniques of testing equipment, methods and techniques of troubleshooting, and data input/ output requirements.

Ability to: Set up and operate an electronic computer and peripheral equipment; identify system malfunctions; install and troubleshoot computer components, software, and radio related computer software; identify radio interference problems; apply appropriate electronic formulas involved in testing, troubleshooting, modifying, installing, maintaining, and repairing radio equipment; provide instruction in the use of standard or system-wide applications; deal effectively with employees and departmental users; maintain records and prepare reports; learn the rules and regulations of the assigned department; and understand and follow oral and written directions.
