Job summary

Leisure World of Maryland is seeking a Communications Specialist to join a small, energetic team serving a large private, independent living community in Silver Spring, MD. You will craft notices, articles and features, shoot photos or video, and manage WordPress content, with opportunities to lead communications projects that inform, educate, and delight residents and stakeholders.

The role requires strong writing, design sensibilities, and the ability to collaborate across teams.

Qualifications

• BA/BS in communications, public relations, journalism or related field or equivalent experience.
• Excellent writing skills expected.
• Ability to multi-task and stay organized to meet deadlines.
• Strong customer service orientation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Ability to provide writing, photography and/or videography samples.

Responsibilities

• Produce a twice-monthly community newsletter (up to 64 pages) including writing, editing, shooting photos and layout.
• Design posters, banners, brochures, booklets and other promotional materials.
• Create and manage content for public-facing and internal residents’ websites.
• Create and post social media content on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
• Support communications needs across publications, internal channels, and digital media.
• Be a source of accurate, organized information for residents, potential residents, advertisers and colleagues.
• Develop outreach and marketing programs.

Job Title: Communications Specialist

Salary Range: $65K - 75K, commensurate with experience.

Full-Time position: 40 hours per week

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Join our small, energetic communications team that serves a large private, independent living community of 8,000-9,000 residents in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Can you write accurate and clear notices, new articles and features? Shoot photos or video with a keen eye? Design an eye-catching poster? Update content on WordPress? Gather, organize and format accurate information? Propose and/or help execute communications projects – whether publications, video features, promotions, internal company communications, or other – that can clarify, inform, educate and even delight? If so, you'll enjoy the Communications team's creative energy and similar skill set.

The candidate should be able to apply diverse skills that include basic experience in print and digital, written and visual communications and/or public relations. Candidate should also be highly detail-oriented, self-motivated and able to work as part of a team.

Our communications team is responsible for:

• producing a twice-monthly community newsletter of up to 64 pages, tabloid – writing, editing, shooting photos, all layout
• designing posters, banners, brochures, booklets and other promotional collaterals
• creating and managing content for a public-facing website and an internal website for residents
• creating and posting social media content – Facebook, Instagram, YouTube
• monitoring and contributing to internal and external communications needs through publications, closed circuit TV channels, websites, email blasts, flyers, notices, brochures and other means of communication
• being a source of accurate, organized information for residents, potential residents, advertising clients, and corporate colleagues
• creating and implementing outreach and marketing programs

REQUIREMENTS

• B.A. degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field or a combination of education and experience
• excellent writing skills
• ability to multi-task and be very organized
• ability to adhere to schedules and deadlines
• excellent customer service skills
• proficiency in Microsoft Office
• ability to provide writing and/or photography and/or videography samples
• positive attitude and willingness to learn
• ability to set and adhere to high standards of quality
