Job summary

Planned Parenthood of Florida seeks a strategic Communications Manager to join our talented team. You will help tell our story, build strong relationships with journalists, and center our patients and supporters through compelling storytelling.

You’ll be part of the Communications, Brand and Marketing team, advancing access to health care and amplifying the voices of the communities we serve in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in communications, media relations, or advocacy.
  • Strong understanding of reproductive health issues and Florida landscape.
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and presentation skills for diverse audiences.
  • Proven success developing media relationships and placing stories.
  • Proficiency in media relations platforms, including Cision.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office for coordination and content creation.
  • Skilled in Canva and other design tools.
  • Experience in mission-driven or advocacy organizations preferred.
  • Strategic thinker managing multiple projects and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver rapid-response internal and external communications.
  • Draft and manage internal communications, newsletters, and leadership updates.
  • Collaborate on internal reports and trainings.
  • Serve as liaison to gather staff input and shape internal messaging.
  • Develop strategies to promote employee engagement and transparency.
  • Facilitate cross-department meetings.
  • Serve as spokesperson, field media inquiries, and prepare talking points.

Snapshot of key accountabilities of the Communications Manager:
  • Develop and deliver rapid-response internal and external communications in high-pressure situations.
  • Draft and manage internal communications, including newsletters, updates, and leadership announcements.
  • Collaborate on the production of internal reports and trainings.
  • Serve as a key liaison to gather staff input and feedback and shape internal messaging that resonates.
  • Develop and execute innovative strategies to promote employee engagement and organizational transparency.
  • Facilitate cross-department meetings.
  • Serve as a spokesperson, field media inquiries, develop responses, and prepare talking points for spokespeople.
  • Proactively pitch stories to media outlets to elevate PPFL’s mission.
  • Write and distribute press materials, including releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, and digital content.
  • Organize press events and briefings and build and maintain relationships with reporters and editors.
  • Monitor media coverage, current events, and trends and provide timely updates to leadership and staff.
  • Support community engagement and public education efforts by collaborating with colleagues and other departments on communication strategies to reach diverse and multilingual populations.
  • Create unique blog content to elevate PPFL services and sexual and reproductive health topics and issues.
  • Support fundraising and advocacy events with messaging, materials, and logistical coordination as needed.
  • Organize meetings, prepare reports, and coordinate vendor or stakeholder communications.
  • Ensure brand consistency across all platforms and communications.
  • Monitor communications trends and suggest improvements to enhance effectiveness.
  • Support team operations through task management and cross-functional collaboration.
Experience/Education of the Communications Manager:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in communications, media relations, or advocacy.
  • Strong understanding of reproductive health issues, advocacy, and Florida’s health care and political landscape.
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and presentation skills tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Proven success developing relationships with media, managing rapid response, and placing stories.
  • Proficiency in media relations and public relations platforms, including Cision, for press release distribution, media monitoring, coverage analysis, and measurement of brand visibility and impact.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications for project coordination and tracking, content development, newsletter production, and communications copy editing.
  • Skilled in Canva and other design tools to create engaging print and digital communications materials that support brand consistency and audience engagement.
  • Experience working in mission-driven, policy-focused, or advocacy organizations preferred.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Proactive, creative, self-motivated, highly organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with deadlines.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to fostering inclusive and respectful communications.
  • Must be able to travel within the state of Florida.
  • May require evening and weekend availability.
  • Adherence to 501(c)(3) communications guidelines.

Benefits and Compensation:
  • Starting salary for the Communications Manager: $70,000 annually, commensurate with experience and local market conditions.
