Job description

The office of Senator Mazie K. Hirono of Hawaii seeks an experienced Communications Director to lead both press and messaging strategy. This is a senior-level position reporting to the Chief of Staff. Candidates with previous management experience, strong strategic vision and planning, and excellent writing and editing skills are encouraged to apply. The ideal applicant should be comfortable and thrive in a teamwork-oriented office who embraces a progressive policy agenda and the Senator’s work on multiple committees including the Judiciary, Armed Services, Energy and Natural Resources, Veterans’ Affairs, and Small Business.

Primary responsibilities include providing strategic counsel to the Senator and staff on messaging, communication, and media relations; liaising with the legislative and state teams to ensure clear communication of the Senator’s legislative and in-state efforts; and managing a communications team. Additional responsibilities may include drafting statements, press releases, op-eds, and speeches.

Ideal candidates will possess a network of media contacts, and are hardworking, proactive and detail-oriented communicators with a positive attitude who work well under deadlines. The position is based in the Senator’s Washington D.C. office with occasional travel. Applicants should have a minimum of five years of relevant communications experience in Congress, campaigns or a related political environment.
