Job description

Nurturing Minds is a US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to support quality education, life skills, and entrepreneurship to help at-risk girls in Tanzania become leaders in their communities. Currently, Nurturing Minds achieves this through partnership and support of Secondary Education for Girls’ Advancement (SEGA), a community-based non-governmental organization based in Tanzania whose purpose is to improve the quality of life for Tanzanian girls.

The Opportunity

Nurturing Minds seeks a Communications Coordinator for a mid-level position offering an exciting opportunity to grow as a storyteller, communications professional, and nonprofit leader while helping advance an organization with global impact. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Communications Coordinator will play a key role in telling the story of Nurturing Minds and SEGA as the organizations enter their 20th year. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports.

The Communications Coordinator will lead day-to-day content and digital communications, develop compelling stories and donor-facing materials, and help maintain a consistent organizational voice across channels. The role will collaborate with the Executive Director, staff, Board Communications Committee, SEGA colleagues, and external partners on broader communications initiatives, with opportunities to take ownership of projects and build new skills.

A major first-year initiative will be Nurturing Minds’ 20th anniversary, including helping promote an anniversary book. This is an opportunity to contribute to a significant organizational milestone while building a portfolio of meaningful, high-impact communications work.

This is a fully remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere within the U.S. Employees are expected to primarily work between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET, with some flexibility based on location and organizational needs. Occasional U.S. travel is required for board meetings, events, and other activities, with potential opportunities for international travel to Tanzania to visit SEGA. Please note that Nurturing Minds is not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Nurturing Minds staff to develop communications that support fundraising, donor engagement, and stewardship.
  • Develop donor-facing materials that support cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising, including event invitations, campaign materials, impact updates, and other communications.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and other Nurturing Minds staff to ensure fundraising communications effectively convey organizational priorities, impact, and opportunities for support while aligning with the organization’s communications strategy and strategic plan.
Content and Storytelling (25%):
  • Project manage and develop compelling written content that communicates Nurturing Minds’ mission, programs, and impact across print and online newsletters, the website, social media, donor communications, annual reports, and other organizational materials.
  • Identify and develop stories from SEGA students, graduates, staff, and partners that highlight their experiences, achievements, and the impact of Nurturing Minds and SEGA.
  • Gather stories, quotes, photos, videos, and other content from SEGA and Nurturing Minds staff and partners.
  • Translate program updates, data, and other information into engaging and accessible content for a range of audiences.
  • Develop and maintain an organized library of stories, photos, videos, and other communications assets.
  • Ensure content reflects Nurturing Minds’ voice, values, and commitment to ethical and respectful storytelling.
Public Relations (20%):
  • Develop and pursue opportunities to increase Nurturing Minds’ visibility through media coverage, publications, speaking engagements, podcasts, and other external channels.
  • Develop and pitch story ideas, press releases, and other materials to relevant media outlets and publications.
  • Build relationships with journalists, publications, and other external communications partners.
  • Support staff, SEGA representatives, and graduates with talking points and communications materials for media and speaking engagements.
  • Lead communications for key organizational milestones and initiatives, including Nurturing Minds’ 20th anniversary and anniversary book.
Social Media & Digital (15%):
  • Manage Nurturing Minds’ social media presence across relevant platforms and develop and maintain a consistent content calendar.
  • Create, schedule, and publish engaging content across social media, email, and other digital channels.
  • Manage and update website content, ensuring information is current, accurate, engaging, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Develop and execute email communications, including newsletters, organizational updates, and digital campaigns.
  • Monitor social media and digital trends and identify opportunities to expand reach, engagement, and audience growth.
  • Track and analyze social media, website, and email performance and use insights to strengthen communications strategy and content.
Organizational Communications and Special Initiatives (15%):
  • Support consistent application of Nurturing Minds’ brand identity, style guide, and communications standards across organizational materials.
  • Support communications for organizational milestones, events, campaigns, and other priority initiatives.
  • Coordinate with external vendors, designers, media contacts, and other communications partners as needed.
  • Special Initiative: Lead strategic communications and public relations for key organizational milestones and initiatives, including Nurturing Minds’ 20th anniversary and anniversary book. The 20th anniversary presents a significant opportunity to elevate Nurturing Minds’ visibility, expand its audience, deepen engagement with supporters, and generate new funding opportunities. The organization will mark the milestone with a book celebrating its history and the impact it has had on thousands of girls’ lives, bringing those stories to life through the voices and experiences of individual graduates. Working with staff and an outside consultant, the communications coordinator will develop and execute a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy around the anniversary and book launch, identifying opportunities to generate meaningful media coverage and reach new audiences. This will include securing speaking opportunities for staff and graduates, pursuing podcast and broadcast appearances, developing compelling media pitches and stories, and cultivating relationships with local, regional, and national journalists and outlets. The successful candidate will be skilled at translating organizational impact into compelling narratives, identifying newsworthy opportunities, and positioning Nurturing Minds and its community of graduates for greater visibility and influence.
What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months

By the end of the first year, the Communications Coordinator will have established a consistent and sustainable communications rhythm across Nurturing Minds’ digital channels, strengthened the organization’s storytelling and content library, and developed a clear process for gathering stories and content from SEGA and Nurturing Minds colleagues. Success will also include a 10% increase in total audience reach across social media, website traffic, and email subscriptions, increased consistency and engagement across key communications channels, strong support for fundraising and donor communications, effective collaboration with the Board Communications Committee and organizational leadership, and meaningful progress on the 20th anniversary communications and book project.
