Job description

Amazon Leo is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. As a systems development engineer, you will work on a variety of projects and multifunctional groups deeply involved in link budget analysis, signal processing, and RF testing and validation. You will also be involved in system-level integration of ground-based and user terminal subsystems that enable next-generation Amazon Leo satellite communication services.

This is a unique opportunity to apply geospatial analysis and machine learning techniques to RF datasets to help troubleshoot, solve, and improve communication links in space and improve the lives of customers. The team works with customer requirements and wireless implementation teams to develop, automate, and execute test cases including antenna pointing algorithms, handover scenarios, and direct-to-device (DTD) link verification—for state-of-the-art satellite communication ground systems and user terminals.

In This Role You Will
  • Design, build, and support remote sensor data collection pipelines from space-based RF communication links for geospatial analysis
  • Implement best practices for storing, searching, and analyzing terabytes of IQ data streams from multiple ground sites around the world
  • Implement life-cycle management strategies for large RF domain data sets
  • Apply knowledge of geospatial analysis techniques to identify patterns and issues for RF links in space
  • Apply AI/ML techniques for detecting RF and PHY performance anomalies from satellites on orbit
  • Work with communication systems engineers to automate scientific instruments to validate RF communication links in a lab environment
  • Integrate real-world data such as weather forecasts and terrain into link budget prediction models
  • Support DTD integration efforts through test automation, link budget analysis, and troubleshooting HW/SW interfaces
Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or experience working in electrical engineering field
  • Strong CI/CD principles
  • Proficient in AWS Cloud Infrastructure (CDK)
  • Proficient in Python, SQL, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, JavaScript
  • Understanding of vectorization, linear algebra, and matrix multiplication
  • Possess knowledge of basic machine learning algorithms and techniques
  • Familiarity with data visualization libraries (matplotlib, plotly, etc)
  • Experience with remote sensing, image processing, and data pipelines
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters/PhD with emphasis in wireless communication systems
  • Proficiency with modeling in MATLAB and/or C/C++; experience in test automation setup and scripting languages such as Python/Perl/MATLAB
  • Broad spectrum of knowledge to understand end-to-end network system architecture from wireless RF and physical layer through application endpoints
  • 3GPP NTN and O-RAN knowledge
  • Experience leading technical initiatives and key deliverables
  • Ability to work in a small team and drive beyond expectations to deliver results
  • Background in wireless LTE, 5G/6G, RLC, PDCP, RRC, and RAN protocols
  • Knowledge of IP, UDP, TCP, HTTP protocols and analysis tools such as Wireshark
  • Experience with current software development processes and tools including Agile, TDD, BDD, CI, Git
  • Implementation experience with wireless synchronization and parameter sensing techniques such as ranging/positioning based on signaling, as well as low-power design expertise
  • Wireless communication systems or digital signal processing background, with a passion for building, integrating, and testing real-world carrier-grade communication systems
  • Extensive experience with lab test equipment such as channel emulators, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and network traffic generators
  • Experience developing or validating antenna pointing or beam tracking algorithms for LEO or mobile satellite systems
  • Familiarity with direct-to-device (DTD) satellite architectures and 3GPP NTN Rel-17+ specifications
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines for test automation in embedded or wireless system environments
