Capital-Area-Intermediate-Unit is seeking a paraprofessional to facilitate effective communication for students who use sign language and to provide instructional, language, and behavioral supports under a certified teacher's direction.

Responsibilities include assisting with signed communication, classroom management, and collaboration with staff while maintaining confidentiality and following CAIU policies.

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of sign language.
  • Must be certified as a Qualified Paraprofessional, as required under Chapter 14, OR willing to become one within timelines.
  • Must be trained in CPR, First Aid and AED or able to obtain certification.
  • Full certification in Safe Crisis Management or equivalent as required.
  • Ability to lift/assist children with special needs up to 40 lbs.
  • Able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office.

Salary: This paraprofessional position follows the Collective Bargaining Agreement Salary Schedule - HS Diploma: $28,880 (daily rate $152.00) or High School plus 48 college credits OR Associates Degree OR 5 years of classroom support: $31,160 (daily rate $164.00) for the 26/27 SYAdditional Stipend: This position qualifies for an annual stipend of $2,950Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7.5 hours/day, 190 days/yearJob Goal: To facilitate effective communication and participation between students who use sign language and staff in a variety of educational environments. Provide individualized instructional, communication, language, and behavioral supports to students at the direction of the classroom teacher.Performance Responsibilities:1. Support the instruction of the student, especially in the expansion of signed communication system.2. Work with the teacher as a team member in the educational, language, communication, and social development of the assigned student.3. Assist the teacher in developing and maintaining a positive learning environment.4. Assist the teacher upon request in the management of the student’s behavior in accordance with established disciplinary policies and procedures.5. Act as a positive social and emotional role model for the student.6. Facilitate all school activities, announcements, and related comments in the prescribed mode so the student has visual supports, access to the content, and supports for educational participation.7. Support educational staff in the development of their signing abilities.8. Communicate with all members of the educational team to ensure accurate, timely sharing of important information relevant to the student.9. Communicate clearly and concisely; communicate the essential information related in the educational setting at an appropriate developmental level.10. Communicate student progress and needs to all staff included in educational program.11. Apply sound judgment in resolving conflicts and solving problems.12. Effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.13. Respond to common inquiries or complaints from internal and external customers.14. Apply basic mathematical concepts in the performance of routine assignments.15. Define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.16. Interpret technical instructions and regulations.17. Perform instructional activities and monitor the results of those activities under the teacher's direction.18. Provide input to the teacher regarding relevant information on the student’s academic progress, behavioral change, physical needs, and other areas as appropriate.19. Foster a good educational paraprofessional to teacher working relationship, but in no case supersede the teacher's authority in managing all aspects of the instructional program.20. Perform CPR, First Aid, and/or proper child restraint techniques as needed.21. Apply sound judgment to resolve conflicts and solve problems.22. Assist in meeting the student's personal care needs as directed.23. Provide coverage, under the supervision of a certified professional teacher, and monitor recess, lunch, etc., as needed.24. Assist the assigned student to and from vehicles and other parts of the building, and/or offsite experiences, all of which may include lifting.25. Participate in preparation of materials, bulletin boards, and other displays.26. Perform clerical and housekeeping duties as required.27. Complete the School-Based ACCESS Program (SBAP) daily or weekly logs, if the assigned student is eligible, in an accurate and timely manner.28. Attend and participate in training for the School-Based ACCESS Program and SBAP paperwork.29. Maintain confidentiality by refraining from discussion of student progress and problems as required in the CAIU Policy on Confidentiality of Information (FERPA).30. Follow assigned schedule including attendance, start and end times, and overall punctuality.31. Work to create, maintain, and build positive working relationships with internal and external (district, community, agency) staff.32. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the school community.33. Follow all established CAIU policies and administrative procedures.34. Adhere to all federal, state, and local laws; rules; and regulations, particularly as they relate to the Pennsylvania School Code.35. Attend in-services, training, and meetings as directed.36. Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by Supervisor, Team Director, or his/her designee.37. Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director or his/her designee.Qualifications:1. HS Diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.2. Must be certified as a Qualified Paraprofessional, as required under Chapter 14, OR have the ability and willingness to become a Qualified Paraprofessional within the established timelines.4. Must be trained in CPR, First Aid and AED OR have the ability and willingness to obtain CPR, First Aid, AED certification and be willing and fully able to administer these procedures.5. Full certification in Safe Crisis Management (SCM), Safety Care, or other restraint management system as required by the assignment.6. Must have the ability to lift/assist children with special needs. Lifting may be up to 40 lbs. without assistance and more with assistance.7. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.8. Must have computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
