Job summary

Job description

Perform general ledger accounting functions for a commodities trading firm under the supervision of the Accounting Manager. Record and maintain general ledger entries for a commodity including documentation for internal controls and compliance purposes. Prepare monthly financial statements for assigned commodities. The position will be working with the financial reporting group, booking accruals, completing actualizations and recording inventory journals for trading and cargo business in addition to ad hoc projects and reporting related to the accounting and reporting functions.

Key Responsibilities
Commodity Accounting & Close Process
  • Perform month-end close activities for assigned commodity desks, including journal entries and reporting
  • Prepare accruals, trade true-ups, and settlement entries in accordance with accounting standards
  • Record and maintain general ledger activity, ensuring accuracy and completeness
  • Support actualization of trades and cargo movements, including recording inventory
Reconciliations & Controls
  • Prepare account reconciliations and investigate variances
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with internal controls and policies
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests
Financial Analysis (FP&A)
  • Perform P&L analysis for trading activities and explain key drivers/variances
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and planning processes
  • Partner with business teams to provide insights into financial performance
Systems, Data & Reporting
  • Work with large datasets to analyze trading and financial information
  • Support system improvements, automation initiatives, and process enhancementsLi>
  • Prepare ad hoc reports and analysis as needed
  • Overtime may be required during month-end close cycles
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or other related major
  • Minimum 1-3 years oil and gas accounting experience with industry knowledge and terminology, preferably with a trading company with knowledge of derivatives and financial hedging instruments
  • Employ fundamental accounting skills: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and account reconciliations
  • Experience in SAP or other accounting software
  • Proficiency in Excel, with the ability to organize large volumes of data and perform quantitative analysis
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across accounting, risk, and operations teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently research, analyze, and respond to internal and external inquiries with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated with strong work habits, the ability to quickly learn new concepts, and consistently meet internal and external deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in commodities trading, energy, or oil & gas industry
  • CPA or CPA candidate
