Chandra Cerrito / Art Advisors is developing a pre-qualified Interior Artist Pool for a pediatrics hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area’s East Bay. This world-class hospital serves diverse patients from all economic backgrounds, with ages ranging from infants to young adults. The New Hospital Building (NHB) is an extension of the hospital’s existing campus and is expected to open in late 2031.

Art Program

NHB has multiple opportunities for interior artworks throughout the building. Artworks will strongly appeal to children of all ages while also engaging adult family members, hospital staff, visitors, and the broader community. The art program will enhance the healing environment, celebrate the cultural richness of the area, and feature artworks that express or promote ingenuity, innovation, creativity, experimentation, and thoughtful engagement.

The architectural designs for the NHB building are led by the theme of Temescal Creek, one of the key waterways that flows from the East Bay hills to the San Francisco Bay. This creek, including its ecology and inhabitants, will inspire interior design elements and colors throughout the new building. The Temescal Creek theme will be a primary guide for major wayfinding artwork pieces on each floor. Though artworks throughout the interior may be in conversation with creek elements incorporated into the interior design, many works selected for this project may not be directly related to the theme.

The following types of artworks may be relevant:

  • Appealing to various age groups, from infants to young adults
  • Features nature, such as Northern CA landscapes, plants, or animals
  • Welcoming
  • Uplifting
  • Colorful
  • Celebrates a variety of voices and perspectives
  • Sensory rich, appealing to neurodiverse audiences
  • Features families, children, and community

Artwork placements will fall into one of two opportunities:

Opportunity #1 Original Artwork

Artists will provide unframed artworks that are either available or commissioned based on exemplary past works. Artworks must be made from durable materials.

Artwork mediums may include: works on paper, prints (open or limited edition), drawings, paintings, pastels, collage, and photographs. They may also include shallow relief wall-mounted sculpture, such as: glass, ceramic, metal, wood, and mixed media artworks.

All artworks will be wall mounted and will not exceed 4 inches deep. Framing or mounting will be handled by others. Bay Area artists will be responsible to deliver to our local framer at artist’s expense.

Artwork sizes could range from 15”- 48” high x 15” - 72” wide x maximum 4” deep.

Opportunity #2 Image Usage

Artists will provide permission for their artwork image(s) to be used up to four times as a print (by others) on a mural sized wall covering. Other artwork images will be printed (by others) on canvas that will be stretched and framed. Artists may be responsible for delivery to a Bay Area digital service provider of either the proper digital file (at least 300 ppi at final print size), if available, or original artwork to be scanned/photographed at high resolution required for printing. Artists will also be available for review and comment on digital files or proofs.

Budgets

Opportunity 1: Approximate Artwork Price Range: $250-$8,000

Opportunity 2: Approximate Image Usage Fee Range: $1,000-$3,000
