How You Will Make an Impact:

The Commissioning Technician I supports the commissioning of natural gas generation fleets, battery energy storage systems (BESS), power distribution, and balance of plant equipment, bringing new power systems from construction to reliable operation. Working under the direction of senior technicians, this role supports engine startups, fuel gas and cooling system checks, load bank testing, functional testing, and energization, and documents results, punch list items, and deficiencies. Safety discipline and careful documentation are central to the role, which is the entry point into the Atlas commissioning career path.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform functional testing, loop checks, energization, synchronization, and system validation under the direction of senior commissioning personnel.
  • Support the commissioning of natural gas generation units, BESS, power distribution, and balance of plant equipment.
  • Assist with pre-energization inspections, continuity and insulation resistance checks, and point-to-point wiring verification.
  • Support engine startup activities on natural gas generation units, including pre-start checks, fluid and lube system verification, cooling system checks, and first fire support.
  • Assist with fuel gas system commissioning activities, including leak checks, purging, and pressure verification, following all site gas safety requirements.
  • Support load bank testing, engine controls checkout, and emissions equipment commissioning under the direction of senior personnel.
  • Troubleshoot issues encountered during commissioning and elevate complex problems to senior technicians as appropriate.
  • Document test results, punch list items, and deficiencies accurately and completely in commissioning records.
  • Read and work from electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, wiring drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Maintain and properly use test equipment, verifying calibration status before use.
  • Communicate commissioning status, findings, and open items clearly to the commissioning lead and site personnel.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including energy isolation lockout/tagout (LOTO), NFPA 70E electrical safety practices, and site-specific requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Required:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1–2 years of experience in commissioning, construction, or maintenance of power generation or utility-scale electrical systems
  • Experience with natural gas or reciprocating engine generation, switchgear, transformers, or related power equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, P&IDs, and technical documents
  • Strong electrical and/or mechanical troubleshooting skills
  • Working knowledge of electrical safety practices, including lockout/tagout (LOTO)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with strong documentation discipline
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites, including overnight stays
  • Valid Driver’s
  • Preferred:
  • Technical certificate or associate degree in electrical technology, power systems, instrumentation, or a related discipline
  • OSHA 10 or 30 and NFPA 70E electrical safety training, or the ability to obtain
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) or inverter-based resources
  • Experience with engine controls, fuel gas systems, or emissions equipment
  • Experience in industrial, energy, or utility-scale construction environments
Work Location & Travel Requirements:
  • Location: West Texas
  • Work Environment: Field, Shop, and Outdoors; active construction and industrial plant environments, including work in and around energized electrical equipment
  • Travel %: Project-based travel expected
Physical Demands:
  • Regular use of hands to handle, finger, and reach tools, test equipment, and materials
  • Required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed, including work at elevation and in confined spaces
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and heavier items with appropriate assistance or mechanical equipment
  • Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to work in and around energized electrical equipment while wearing required personal protective equipment
  • Must be able to tolerate conditions associated with field and construction environments, including heat, cold, dust, noise, and limited climate control
