Job summary

Hansell Tierney is seeking a Commissioning Engineer for a first-of-a-kind nuclear demonstration project in Kemmerer, WY. The role supports commissioning activities, coordinating with engineering, operations, and project teams to develop plans, procedures, schedules, testing, and operational strategies.

Requirements include a engineering degree in a relevant field and 7+ years of nuclear power plant experience, plus 5+ years of reactor operating exposure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering from an accredited university.
  • 7+ years direct nuclear power plant experience commissioning safety-related systems.
  • 5+ years direct commercial nuclear reactor operating experience.
  • Experience developing nuclear plant commissioning processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of licensing requirements and work control in nuclear projects.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear regulations and design control in complex industry.
  • Experience with NQA-1 or ISO 9001 quality standards.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and training development skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate geographically diverse design and commissioning teams to develop documentation.
  • Develop and implement nuclear plant commissioning programs, processes, and procedures.
  • Coordinate integrated commissioning schedules across organizations.
  • Provide subject matter expertise related to nuclear regulations, licensing, and industry best practices.
  • Support development and maintenance of plant-level and system-level requirements, specifications, and strategy documents.
  • Apply engineering principles to support design and operation of nuclear/industrial facilities.
  • Lead commissioning and design activities evaluating plant controls, transient event responses, and operational strategies.
  • Support engineering teams, contractors, and project stakeholders through oversight, coordination, and interface activities.
  • Support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports.
  • Provide leadership for nuclear island commissioning programs, processes, and procedures to ensure testing meets design requirements.
  • Promote continuous improvement through best practices and process enhancements.
  • Manage projects with competing objectives and multidisciplinary requirements.

Job description

Our client, a leading advanced energy technology organization developing next-generation nuclear power systems, is looking for a Commissioning Engineer. This role will support the integrated design, commissioning, and operation of plant systems, structures, and integrated facility analysis for a first-of-a-kind nuclear demonstration project. The Commissioning Engineer will focus on nuclear island commissioning, plant operations, scheduling, planning, testing product development, and collaboration across engineering, operations, and project management teams.

Location

Kemmerer, WY – Onsite or Hybrid (Remote + Travel to Site)

Duration

12 Months+

Compensation

$69 - $115 per hour.

Additional Compensation

This position is not eligible for bonus or incentive compensation.

Summary

The Commissioning Engineer will report to the Commissioning Manager and support commissioning activities for a next-generation nuclear power facility. This position will coordinate with engineering teams, project managers, operators, subcontractors, partners, and customers to develop commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, testing documentation, and operational strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate geographically diverse design and commissioning teams to develop supporting design, testing, and commissioning documentation.
  • Develop and implement nuclear plant commissioning administrative programs, processes, and procedures.
  • Develop and coordinate integrated nuclear plant commissioning schedules across multiple organizations.
  • Provide subject matter expertise related to nuclear regulations, company policies, licensing requirements, and industry best practices for commissioning activities.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and refinement of plant-level and system-level requirements, specifications, and strategy documents related to commissioning, operations, and maintenance activities.
  • Apply engineering principles, methods, and tools to support the design and operation of nuclear and industrial facilities and their systems.
  • Lead commissioning and design activities evaluating integrated plant controls, transient event responses, and operational strategies.
  • Support engineering teams, contractors, and project stakeholders through oversight, coordination, and interface activities.
  • Support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for nuclear island commissioning programs, processes, and procedures to ensure testing meets design requirements.
  • Promote continuous improvement through the application of nuclear industry best practices and identification of process enhancements.
  • Manage projects with competing objectives, technical constraints, and multidisciplinary requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Electrical, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of direct nuclear power plant experience commissioning safety-related (or equivalent) systems and components.
  • 5+ years of direct commercial nuclear reactor operating experience.
  • Experience developing and/or using nuclear plant commissioning administrative processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of implementing requirements and licensing basis criteria for nuclear work control, maintenance strategies, and operational programs.
  • Deep understanding of nuclear regulations, plant work control processes, operational design philosophies, and integrated plant operations during normal and off-normal events.
  • Strong understanding of configuration management principles and design control tools used in nuclear or similarly complex industrial applications.
  • Experience working to NQA-1 or ISO 9001 quality standards.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, presentation, and training development skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to technical excellence.
  • Ability to independently coordinate and support engineering teams with minimal direction.
  • Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and resolve design conflicts.
  • Ability to support multidisciplinary engineering tasks.
Nice to Have
  • Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience implementing integrated plant design for nuclear systems, including complex systems and structures.
  • Experience developing and/or approving nuclear plant operations and maintenance procedures.
  • Experience using Primavera P6 or similar scheduling software to develop long‑term schedules.
  • Knowledge of risk‑informed methodologies for integrated plant design or other probabilistic design methods.
  • Experience supporting licensing activities and Safety Analysis Reports.
  • Experience developing plant commissioning schedules and testing strategies for large‑scale nuclear projects.
