Job summary

Wildhorse Recruiting is seeking Mechanical Commissioning Engineers with hands-on data center experience to lead commissioning of cooling and HVAC systems. The role covers equipment startup through functional testing and IST with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities include reviewing drawings and procedures, walking down equipment, coordinating with vendors, verifying sensors and controls, and documenting test results. Relocation assistance is available for project sites.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of mechanical commissioning experience on data center projects.
• Hands-on commissioning for cooling/HVAC equipment such as chillers, CRAHs/CRACs, pumps, and cooling towers.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings, sequences of operation, and test procedures.
• Strong field troubleshooting, documentation and coordination skills.

Job description

Seeking Mechanical Commissioning Engineers with hands-on experience commissioning cooling and HVAC systems on data center projects. This field-based role supports Level 3 through Level 5 (L3–L5) commissioning, from equipment startup and verification through functional testing and integrated systems testing.

Responsibilities

• Review mechanical drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment submittals, sequences of operation, test procedures, and commissioning schedules to understand each system’s design and testing requirements.
• Walk down installed equipment and identify incomplete work, installation deficiencies, and issues that must be resolved before startup or testing.
• Coordinate with equipment manufacturers and contractors during startup of applicable cooling equipment, such as chillers, pumps, cooling towers or dry coolers, computer room air handlers (CRAHs), computer room air conditioners (CRACs), air handlers, and coolant distribution units (CDUs). Review startup records and confirm equipment is ready for functional testing.
• Verify that piping, valves, sensors, and controls are installed and operating as intended. Review flushing, pressure testing, and testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) results where applicable.
• Execute and document functional tests of equipment operation, capacity control, temperature and pressure response, alarms, interlocks, and automatic changeover between duty and standby equipment.
• Verify building management system (BMS) points, graphics, alarms, trends, and control sequences against equipment behavior observed in the field.
• Test cooling system responses to changes in load and simulated failures, including loss of a pump or cooling unit, loss and restoration of power, and recovery to normal operation, as specified in project test scripts.
• Participate in integrated systems testing (IST) with electrical and controls teams to verify that cooling systems maintain the required conditions during simulated operating and failure scenarios.
• Record test results, maintain deficiency logs, track resolutions and retesting, and prepare commissioning documentation for project turnover.
• Coordinate daily testing activities with construction, engineering, controls, electrical commissioning, and equipment vendor teams. Follow site safety procedures throughout startup and testing.

Required qualifications

• At least 2 years of mechanical commissioning experience, with the technical depth and responsibility appropriate to a mid- or senior-level position.
• Direct, hands-on mechanical commissioning experience on data center projects. Candidates should be able to describe the equipment they commissioned, tests they performed, and problems they resolved.
• Experience with data center cooling or HVAC equipment, such as chillers, pumps, heat rejection equipment, CRAHs, CRACs, air handlers, or CDUs.
• Experience with equipment startup, functional performance testing, controls verification, or IST.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and interpret system flow paths, redundancy, and sequences of operation.
• Strong field troubleshooting, documentation, and coordination skills.

Preferred experience

• Direct participation in L3–L5 data center commissioning, particularly L4 functional testing and L5 IST.
• Experience with chilled water systems, liquid cooling systems, TAB review, or BMS integration.
• Experience testing cooling system response to equipment failures, power transfers, and changing thermal loads.
• Experience leading test activities and resolving deficiencies with contractors and equipment vendors.

Schedule and relocation

Candidates who prefer not to relocate can work a two-week onsite, one-week offsite rotation at the project sites. Relocation assistance is available for candidates interested in moving near a project site.
