Data Center Field Service / Commissioning Engineer

The Role
We are seeking an experienced Data Center Field Service / Commissioning Engineer to provide hands‑on field support across major data center projects.
This role is focused on the startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems, with a strong emphasis on cooling infrastructure.
You will work directly at customer sites, commissioning equipment and resolving technical issues while working closely with project managers, project engineers, production, quality teams, consultants and client personnel.
The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical/HVAC or electrical background, with experience in data centers, critical infrastructure, industrial facilities or similar complex environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support field commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Perform equipment startup, testing, troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance.
- Commission mechanical and electrical systems and provide detailed documentation of completed work.
- Troubleshoot mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, controls, communications and associated systems.
- Create clear red‑line drawings and provide field feedback to project and engineering teams.
- Support the handoff from construction into commissioning and operations.
- Compile O&M information and assist with final IOM documentation.
- Work closely with project managers, project engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, quality teams and client personnel.
- Perform or oversee quality control checks.
- Support factory assembly, equipment testing and training where required.
- Provide technical feedback from the field to improve future projects.
Mechanical / HVAC Systems
Experience with the following is highly valuable:
- Centrifugal chillers
- Cooling towers
- Vertical turbine pumps
- Split‑coupled inline pumps
- Hydronic systems
- HVAC equipment
- Variable frequency drives
- Mechanical equipment startup and troubleshooting
Experience with major chiller and cooling tower manufacturers is advantageous.
Electrical / Controls Systems
Experience with:
- Electrical distribution systems
- Electric motors
- Variable speed/frequency drives
- PLCs
- Building controls / BAS / BMS
- Electrical drawings and schematics
Exposure to brands such as Eaton, Allen‑Bradley or similar is beneficial.
What We're Looking For
- Significant field experience in construction support, equipment startup, commissioning, repair or maintenance.
- Strong mechanical/HVAC or electrical engineering background.
- Data center experience is highly desirable.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and schematics.
- Experience troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Exposure to PLCs or building automation/controls.
- Ability to work independently at customer job sites.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
- Understanding of relevant industry codes and standards, including ASHRAE and ASME where applicable.
- Ability to work in active construction and industrial environments.
- Willingness to travel extensively, including domestic and international projects.
- Safe driving record and ability to obtain required safety certifications.
Education & Training
- HVAC trade school, apprenticeship, electrical training, engineering qualification or equivalent technical experience is preferred.
- Military training and relevant technical experience may also be considered in place of formal trade qualifications.
