AD Energy Recruitment is partnering with a leading organisation within the renewable energy and waste-to-energy sector to recruit an experienced Commissioning Engineer to support the delivery and start-up of projects across North America.
This is a genuinely hands-on commissioning position, suited to an engineer who enjoys being out on site, working directly with equipment and taking ownership of getting systems safely and successfully operational.
You’ll be involved across the full commissioning lifecycle, from pre-commissioning and mechanical completion through start-up, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), performance testing and final handover into operations.
The Opportunity
Working closely with engineering, construction, automation, equipment vendors, subcontractors and operations teams, you’ll play a key role in making sure new systems are installed correctly, tested thoroughly and ready for reliable operation.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work across a variety of technically interesting projects within the renewable energy, waste-to-energy and industrial process sectors.
What Will You Be Doing?
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the development and execution of commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, checklists and test protocols.
- Helping develop the overall commissioning strategy and sequence alongside project management, engineering, construction and automation teams.
- Coordinating and executing on-site activities from pre-commissioning through start-up, SAT, performance testing and final handover.
- Verifying mechanical completion and ensuring systems are genuinely ready before commissioning begins.
- Carrying out equipment inspections, equipment checkout, calibration verification, loop checks, I/O checks and functional testing.
- Performing and coordinating both dry and wet commissioning across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, automation and process systems.
- Supporting testing and start-up of PLC, HMI and SCADA systems.
- Troubleshooting equipment, instrumentation, process and control-system issues and supporting corrective actions.
- Working directly with automation engineers and equipment vendors to confirm equipment and systems are operating as intended.
- Coordinating day-to-day commissioning activity across construction teams, vendors, subcontractors and project personnel.
- Tracking commissioning progress, testing results, outstanding issues and corrective actions.
- Managing and closing out commissioning punch-list items.
- Working with operations teams and client representatives throughout start-up, testing and handover.
- Supporting operator training and ensuring the site is operationally ready before turnover.
- Reviewing as-built documentation, operating manuals and final turnover packages.
- Maintaining accurate commissioning documentation, test reports, checklists and final handover records.
What Are We Looking For?
We’re looking for someone with a strong industrial engineering background who is comfortable being hands-on and solving problems in the field.
Ideally, you’ll bring:
- 3–5+ years of relevant industrial experience, including hands-on commissioning, start-up and/or operations exposure.
- A solid understanding of commissioning and start-up within industrial process facilities.
- Knowledge across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls and automation systems.
- Practical experience with loop checks, I/O checks, functional testing and equipment checkout.
- Working knowledge of PLC, HMI, SCADA, instrumentation and industrial communication networks.
- The ability to confidently read and interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, electrical drawings and control schematics.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify problems and work through practical solutions on site.
- Knowledge of commissioning safety practices, including LOTO, permit-to-work systems and risk assessments.
- The ability to work independently while also being comfortable operating within multidisciplinary project teams.
If you’re a Commissioning Engineer who likes being on site, close to the equipment and involved in solving real technical problems, this is a role where you can have a genuine impact.
