Commissioning Engineer

GenSystems Power Solutions is seeking a Commissioning Engineer to support testing and commissioning activities for BESS, microgrid, and EPC projects.
This position supports projects from pre-commissioning through substantial completion, with responsibility for commissioning planning, field execution, functional testing, troubleshooting, supplier coordination, system performance verification, and O&M handover.
The role is based from the Houston office with approximately 60% or more of working time at project sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in project planning meetings with owners, O&M teams, design groups, construction teams, and project leadership.
- Support development of commissioning plans, specifications, checklists, functional testing procedures, and related documentation.
- Review project documents and preliminary designs to identify commissioning scope gaps and responsibility issues.
- Lead onsite commissioning activities, including scope management, schedule tracking, and stakeholder coordination.
- Coordinate with Site Project Managers, Project Managers, utilities, AHJs, contractors, suppliers, and end customers.
- Manage equipment-supplier commissioning activities and conduct daily Plan of the Day meetings.
- Review Factory Acceptance Test procedures and final FAT reports.
- Coordinate site commissioning plans, schedules, test procedures, and checklists.
- Support functional testing and performance verification of BESS and associated electrical systems.
- Inspect construction workmanship and support resolution of installation and commissioning issues.
- Troubleshoot BESS, medium-voltage equipment, protection systems, and related electrical systems.
- Recommend improvements to commissioning plans, procedures, and execution methods based on project lessons learned.
- Train and coordinate O&M personnel on operation and maintenance requirements for commissioned systems.
- Support ongoing and continuous commissioning activities as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent practical technical experience.
- 3+ years of commissioning and/or systems-engineering experience with an energy-storage integrator, EPC contractor, power-equipment manufacturer, or related organization.
- Direct hands-on experience with battery energy storage systems, medium-voltage stations, and related electrical systems.
- Demonstrated independent troubleshooting capability.
- Working knowledge of BESS commissioning, testing, and system-startup workflows.
- Strong technical knowledge of medium-voltage electrical installations.
- Experience with ampacity calculations, short-circuit and load-flow analysis, protective-device coordination, arc-flash assessment, and grounding practices including IEEE 80.
- Practical systems-engineering experience.
- Working knowledge of NEC and UL compliance requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple project priorities and field issues simultaneously.
- Available for regular travel and extended time at project sites.
