Job summary

Arizona State University in Tempe seeks a Commissioning Agent II to lead commissioning and retro-commissioning of existing buildings and support new construction. You will guide complex systems testing, validation, and energy performance improvements across campus.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Serve as the Commissioning Authority and lead commissioning and retro-commissioning efforts for existing buildings.
• Develop and manage comprehensive commissioning plans, specifications, and work plans.
• Support new construction and CPMG Commissioning efforts by design reviews at multiple stages.
• Review and validate submittals, shop drawings, sequences of operation, HVAC systems, controls, and building systems.
• Develop and execute testing scripts and functional protocols for mechanical, electrical, and control systems to ensure energy savings.
• Utilize TAB procedures to evaluate building systems’ efficiency.
• Conduct investigations, energy audits, and field observations to troubleshoot issues.
• Produce final turnover packages and commissioning reports for stakeholders.
• Coordinate commissioning meetings with design teams, contractors, and CPMG.
• Gather and evaluate EIS and EMS control data.
• Support LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning requirements.
• Provide QA/QC of commissioning deliverables.
• Mentor junior commissioning staff.

Job Description:

Facilities Development and Management Seeks a Commissioning Agent II to serve as the Commissioning Authority to lead commissioning and retro-commissioning projects for existing buildings and support new construction. This role requires extensive expertise in complex building systems to advance campus energy and sustainability goals through rigorous performance testing, system validation, and the operational optimization of HVAC mechanical systems and controls.

This position is based on the Tempe campus but will require working another campus locations based on program need.

This position will remain open until filled.

Essential Duties:

• Serve as the Commissioning Authority and lead commissioning and retro-commissioning efforts for existing buildings.
• Develop and manage comprehensive commissioning plans, specifications, and work plans.
• Support new construction and CPMG Commissiong efforts by performing thorough design reviews at multiple stages (Basis of Design, Design Development, Construction Documents).
• Review and validate submittals, shop drawings, sequences of operation, HVAC mechanical systems, controls, and associated building systems.
• Develop and execute testing scripts, pre-functional checklists, and functional performance protocols for mechanical, electrical, and control systems to ensure operational optimization and energy savings persistence.
• Utilize test and balance (TAB) procedures and tools to evaluate building systems' efficiency and performance.
• Conduct building investigations, performance assessments, energy audits, and field observations to troubleshoot systems, resolve issues, and identify operational defects or energy-waste issues.
• Produce technically sound documentation, including site observation logs, issue tracking reports, comprehensive final turnover packages, and formal commissioning reports to inform stakeholders.
• Coordinate and lead commissioning meetings, multidisciplinary design teams, contractors, and the Capital Programs Management Group (CPMG) during design, construction, turnover, and operational phases.
• Gather and evaluate Energy Information Systems (EIS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) control data.
• Support LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning requirements, ensuring compliance with building performance standards and assisting with long-term campus energy initiatives.
• Provide QA/QC review of commissioning deliverables.
• Mentor junior commissioning staff.

Days and Schedule:

Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm

Salary Range:

$85,000 - $102,000 per year, commensurate experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent military/technical training.
• Minimum of 10 years of verified experience leading complex commissioning projects, building systems, or related engineering roles. (Note: Alternative education and experience pathways may be considered, such as a related degree with fewer years if possessing a PE/RA, or 10+ years of experience without a degree. Holding a current AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM) status satisfies the core prerequisite).
• Demonstrated experience in the commissioning of complex building systems (HVAC, electrical, and controls).
• Proven experience delivering LEED commissioning (Fundamental and Enhanced Cx).
• Experience preparing proposal responses and technical narratives.
• Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid U.S. driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license and/or industry-recognized commissioning certifications (e.g., CxA, BCxP, CBCP, or CCP) are heavily preferred.
• Certified Energy Manager (CEM) accreditation from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).
• LEED AP credential and extensive experience with LEED submissions, regulatory compliance, and building sustainability certifications.
• Strong technical command of ASHRAE guidelines, building automation/controls systems (BAS/BMS), and energy codes.
• Extensive knowledge of testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) procedures and tools.
• Two (2) or more years of experience in a university campus, large facility, or related institutional setting.
• Proficiency in HVAC load calculation software (e.g., Trace or IES) and experience setting up technical databases and energy modeling software.
