Job summary

Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI) is seeking a Commissioning Agent for our Chapel Hill office to drive energy‑efficient solutions for data centers and mission‑critical facilities.

You will lead Level 1–5 commissioning processes and oversee field testing, ensuring reliability of critical systems. The role requires 2+ years of commissioning experience, an technical or associate degree, and the ability to collaborate with Owners, Contractors, and Engineers while traveling as needed.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of commissioning experience for data center or mission critical facilities.
  • Technical or Associate Degree from an accredited technical institution or college; or commensurate design/construction experience in mechanical, electrical, and/or controls systems.
  • General understanding of building systems across all design disciplines; experience with power distribution, cooling systems and controls desired.
  • Ability to learn to interpret guidelines, standards, and best practices related to data center construction.
  • Willingness to travel; not long‑term site deployments.
  • Willingness to become OSHA certified.
  • Valid driver’s license and state-required vehicle insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve commissioning challenges and implement the Level 1–5 commissioning process delivery per Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR), Basis of Design (BOD), plans and specs.
  • Oversee and execute quality observation and testing in the field.
  • Maintain direct communication with Owners, Contractors, and Engineers to ensure collaborative problem solving.
  • Travel as required by projects and contribute to multi‑discipline teamwork.

As a Commissioning Agent-Data Centerin our Chapel Hill office, you will help us empower our clients to achieve energy‑efficient building solutions, save global environments, and create a better, greener future for all. You will help us empower our data center clients to trust in the reliability of their mission critical systems to preserve data, protect assets, and save lives. You’ll also lead efforts to achieve energy‑efficient building solutions, and help operators improve their ability to safely and effectively manage the data center. You will work in a multi-disciplined and cross‑trained team of commissioning professionals in a team‑oriented atmosphere. Why We Need You:

In this role, you will be responsible for resolving commissioning challenges and completing tasks assigned, including developing and implementing the Level 1 – 5 commissioning process delivery set forth in Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR), Basis of Design (BOD), plans and specifications. You will oversee and execute the quality observation and testing in the field.

Expertise of our most successful Commissioning Agent:

  • Minimum 2 years of commissioning experience for data center or mission critical facilities.
  • Technical or Associate Degree from an accredited technical institution or college; or commensurate design or construction experience in mechanical, electrical, and/or controls systems.
  • General understanding of building systems across all design disciplines. A more detailed understanding of power distribution, cooling systems, and controls desired.
  • Ability to learn to interpret guidelines, standards, and best practices related to data center construction.
  • Ability to become proficient with software programs for business as well as could-based commissioning and construction:
    • Microsoft Word, Excel
    • CxAlloy
    • Autodesk BIM360, ACCBuild, and similar.
  • Ability to travel as required by the project. We do not promote long‑term deployments to site.
  • Willingness to become OSHA certified.
  • Valid driver’s license and state required vehicle insurance.
