Job description

A rare opportunity to build and lead a commissioning practice from the ground up within an established, employee-owned Midwest engineering firm. Reporting to the Division Leader for Mechanical and Plumbing Engineering, the Commissioning Agent will serve as the founding technical authority — setting standards, writing proposals, and shaping how commissioning is delivered across healthcare, commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. For the right professional, this is a mandate to define something, not inherit it.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Establish and lead the commissioning program, including standards, procedures, tools, and documentation.
  • Serve as Lead Commissioning Authority across healthcare, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects.
  • Develop commissioning scopes, proposals, and fee estimates with division leadership.
  • Lead all commissioning phases from design review through post-occupancy closeout.
  • Execute functional performance testing and manage deficiency tracking and resolution.
  • Oversee commissioning of HVAC, controls, electrical, BAS, and specialty systems.
  • Build, mentor, and grow a commissioning team over time.
  • Develop long-term client relationships and expand commissioning market presence.
  • Support business development and co-develop the commissioning book of business.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design teams across active projects.
Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of commissioning experience across multiple commercial building sectors; proven track record as lead commissioning authority on complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to read HVAC plans and interpret control sequences to develop functional performance tests.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the organizational discipline to build a practice from scratch.
  • Strong client-facing communication skills; ability to develop proposals and grow a book of business.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred; equivalent experience considered.

Preferred

  • AABC CxA, ASHRAE BCxP, CCP, or equivalent credential; PE license a plus.
  • Healthcare commissioning experience; background in controls or mechanical contracting a strong asset.
  • Experience with retro-commissioning, existing building commissioning, or BAS/energy management.
Competencies
  • Technically credible; sells through expertise, not charisma.
  • Organizationally self-sufficient; creates structure and process from nothing.
  • Entrepreneurial, analytically rigorous, collaborative, and high-energy.
