St. Joseph County is seeking a Commercial/Industrial Field Deputy in the Assessor's office to collect and verify property data for assessment purposes.

This full-time role conducts field inspections, maintains records, and supports the Commercial Department to ensure accurate and equitable assessments. Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in field and office settings are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Indiana Appraisal Certification Levels I–III or progression toward certification.
• Strong analytical and organizational abilities required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn assessment software.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential properties to collect, verify, and maintain accurate property characteristics.
• Measure structures and verify exterior dimensions using accepted assessment standards.
• Inspect new construction, remodeling projects, demolitions, and property improvements.
• Assist department managers with property research and data collection.
• Obtain Indiana Appraisal Certification Levels I, II and III; attend meetings and continuing education.

The Commercial and Industrial Field Deputy is a full-time position responsible for collecting, verifying, and maintaining accurate commercial, industrial and residential property data for assessment purposes. This position conducts field inspections, maintains property records, and assists the Commercial Department in ensuring accurate and equitable property assessments. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical and organization skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in both field and office environments while providing outstanding customer service.

• Obtain Indiana Appraisal Certification Levels I, II and III. Required to attend meetings, training programs, and continuing education courses.

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn specialized assessment software, GIS applications, and other County technology.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to read and interpret building plans, sketches, property record cards, and construction information, or the aptitude to quickly learn.

Education/Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s of Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Real Estate, Construction Management, Engineering, Surveying, Geography, Public Administration or a related field.

Physical Requirements

• Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
