Position Overview

The Middle Market Portfolio Manager is responsible for managing and monitoring a portfolio of middle market commercial and industrial (C&I) relationships in the Houston market. The role partners closely with Relationship Managers and credit teams to structure, underwrite, and manage credit exposures while maintaining strong client relationships and portfolio quality.

Responsibilities
  • Manage an assigned portfolio of middle market commercial banking relationships.
  • Analyze financial statements, cash flow, liquidity, leverage, and overall creditworthiness of borrowers and guarantors.
  • Review and approve or recommend credit requests within delegated lending authority.
  • Structure loans, renewals, amendments, and other credit facilities consistent with bank credit policy.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, covenant compliance, borrowing base requirements, and emerging credit issues.
  • Identify deteriorating credits and work with Relationship Managers and credit leadership on appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with Relationship Managers on new business opportunities, relationship expansion, and client retention.
  • Prepare and present credit approval materials and portfolio reviews to senior credit officers and lending committees.
  • Maintain accurate credit documentation and ensure adherence to bank policies, regulatory requirements, and risk standards.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the Houston middle market, including key industries, companies, and local economic conditions.
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of commercial banking, middle market lending, credit, or portfolio management experience.
  • Strong credit analysis and financial statement analysis skills.
  • Experience with C&I lending and commercial loan structures.
  • Ability to independently manage a portfolio and make sound credit recommendations.
  • Strong understanding of cash flow lending, collateral analysis, covenants, and risk rating methodologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field preferred.
Preferred
  • Existing experience with middle market clients in the Houston market.
  • Experience working with companies generally ranging from $25 million to $500 million+ in annual revenue.
  • Prior experience at a regional or commercial bank.
  • Familiarity with energy, industrial, manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, or other major Houston middle market industries.
  • Existing relationships with Houston-based businesses and professional networks are a plus.
