Job summary

Spotsylvania County seeks an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to operate a range of motorized heavy vehicles for the Utilities/Public Works Department. You will handle refuse, recyclables, debris, and wastewater residuals with emphasis on safety and efficiency.

Responsibilities include inspections, minor maintenance, critical logging, and rapid response to incidents or snow events. A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is required, with additional endorsements obtained within specified

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent and 1–3 years of experience operating Class B and/or Class A commercial vehicles.
• Valid Class A CDL with air-brake endorsement; tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire.
• DOT pre-employment drug screen and physical; forklift certification within 6 months.
• Basic computer/technical skills and CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Operate commercial vehicles including tractor trailers, roll-offs, tankers, and other heavy equipment safely.
• Perform pre/post trip inspections and basic preventative maintenance on trucks and equipment.
• Maintain daily hauling and maintenance logs; report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
• Respond to emergencies, snow removal, and weather-related assignments as required.
• Attend required trainings and ensure compliance with OSHA and County policies.

General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, perform specialized skilled work in the operation of several types of motorized heavy vehicles used in the collection and transfer of refuse, recyclables, debris, construction materials, equipment, compost and wastewater residuals for the Utilities/Public Works Department. Work involves operating such equipment as tractor trailers, walking floor trailers, tanker trailers, semi-dump trailers, roll-offs, hook lifts, snow plows, forklifts, portable/non-portable pumps and dump trucks with trailers, etc. Employee is responsible for manipulating such vehicles with considerable skill and constant attention to safety of operation. Performs minor preventative maintenance on equipment and performs various duties to assist department maintenance crews. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks.

This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed. Applicants must be available to work Sunday through Saturday as needed.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

• Operates one or more types of commercial vehicles requiring a Class A with tanker endorsement Virginia’s Commercial Driver’s License. Operates said vehicles in accordance with Spotsylvania County policies, Department of Transportation regulations, and any applicable federal, state, or local regulations.
• Performs pre and post trip inspections and documents the inspection on forms as directed.
• Performs preventative maintenance and related care of trucks and equipment, making minor repairs, as needed.
• Immediately report all unsafe equipment and situations to supervisors.
• Utilizes commercial vehicles to collect various type containers to include hook lift containers and roll off containers. Inspects and reports any collection container that is need of repair to supervisors.
• Fuels and cleans trucks and equipment; utilizes steam cleaning and pressure washing equipment.
• Maintains a daily logbook for record of hauling and equipment maintenance record on all equipment used in operation.
• Attends and participates in any scheduled training programs or meetings as required.
• Immediately reports any incident, accident, or injury to their supervisor.
• Removes snow from roads and parking lots as directed by the County.
• Responds to emergency calls as required.
• Operates forklifts as needed.
• Operates portable and non-portable pumps for transfer of liquid wastes.
• Hauls wide and oversized loads as needed.
• Transports various equipment to include wood waste grinders, trommels screens, and heavy equipment with lowboy.
• Operates stationary refuse compactors as needed.
• Operate electronic devices to include portable and non-portable radios, cellular devices, tablets, and personal computers.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent, and one (1) to three (3) years of experience in operating Class B and/or Class A commercial vehicles; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Possess a valid commercial driver's license, Class A, issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an air-brake endorsement.

Tanker endorsement must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.

Successfully complete and pass pre-employment DOT drug screen and DOT physical.

Obtain a fork lift certification within six (6) months of hire.

Basic Computer and technical skills.

Valid Adult CPR/AED Certification or must obtain with 90 days of hire.

Valid First Aid Certification or must obtain with 90 days of hire.

Required

Complete all assigned internal and OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety) trainings as required by the County. Training includes but is not limited to:

• OSHA 10 Hour-Construction/Industry
• Control of Hazardous Energy (Lock out/tag out)
• Confined space awareness
• Blood borne pathogens
• Container loading/unloading
• Stationary compactor operation
• Safe driving
• Equipment specific competency training

Heavy Equipment experience is desirable.

Special Requirements

• Knowledge of the operation of motorized equipment and commercial vehicles.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions involved in operating heavy motorized equipment.
• Skill in the use and operation of various heavy trucks.
• Ability to operate trucks over assigned routes safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
• Ability to perform minor maintenance on heavy motorized equipment.
