OVERVIEW

Monitor and assess the credit risks of larger, more complex commercial loan portfolios and higher dollar loans through detailed financial statement analysis, industry assessment, collateral valuation, cash flow analysis, and the ability to repay annual debt service.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Manage the ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring (CCM) activities, enabling the timely identification of emerging credit risks to take appropriate actions to manage risk, minimize losses, and assign accurate risk ratings. CCM includes, but is not limited to, annual reviews, PLRs, Guarantor Assessments, interim update memos, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other credit surveillance.
  2. Review all relevant credit and financial information, including financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureaus, appraisals, internal credit data, industry research, and peer data. Determine if further investigation or additional information is needed.
  3. Analyze financial information and related materials, and complete ongoing credit monitoring for the Bank’s commercial transactions. Assess risk of customers continuously, focusing on emerging risks or material changes in financial position, including compliance with loan agreements. Provide independent credit quality assessments with well-supported risk ratings, identify credit risks and mitigants, and consider industry concerns, market trends, and financial trends.
  4. Liaise between Commercial Banking Relationship Managers and the Underwriting Team to facilitate credit needs, including new requests, modifications, or annual reviews. Document and track relevant information, reports, and memos to ensure credit approvals are obtained, documented, and adhered to, maintaining timely and accurate risk ratings.
  5. Spread financial statements and prepare financial models to analyze various conditions impacting transactions. Prepare cash flow analyses, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, financial models, and guarantor statement analyses as needed.
  6. Monitor credit performance of customer portfolios and escalate or remediate issues as appropriate.
  7. Ensure the timeliness of monitoring activities and compliance with credit policies by verifying adherence and evaluating risks associated with non-compliance.
  8. Present analysis and address questions during credit discussions or presentations.
  9. Attend client calls with RMs to gain understanding of clients and their businesses, supporting annual reviews, renewals, and ongoing monitoring.
  10. Adhere to applicable compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
  11. Promote an environment of belonging that reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  12. Maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit points and addressing issues raised by external regulators.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
SCOPE

The Commercial Credit Portfolio Management Department oversees the ongoing monitoring of the Bank’s commercial loans, ensuring accurate credit risk ratings and compliance with policies and loan agreements.

This role interacts with Relationship Managers across the bank’s footprint, typically managing portfolios of $30MM or more, working independently with limited supervision.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Contribute to training of junior or newly hired Portfolio Managers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related discipline, with 5 years' experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement analysis, or related fields. Alternatively, a minimum of 9 years’ combined higher education and work experience, including at least 5 years in relevant financial analysis roles.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong analytical abilities.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

M&T Bank offers a competitive, market-informed pay range for this position, from $93,614.36 to $156,023.93 (USD). Compensation will be based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and experience.
