The University of Michigan's Wolverine Pathways seeks part-time instructors to support college-prep programming for motivated 10th–12th grade students across Detroit, Southfield, Ypsilanti, and Grand Rapids. Instructors deliver remote sessions, guiding students toward college readiness with structured materials.

You will lead synchronous classes, run small groups, and track progress while coordinating with WP staff.

Qualifications

Mission Statement

The Vice Provost for Access and Opportunity (VPAO) oversees programs that promote college readiness, ease the transition to university life, and help students navigate their academic paths. These efforts include outreach to K-12 learners, support throughout the college experience, and initiatives that encourage meaningful engagement and personal growth. The portfolio also includes programs focused on spiritual, religious, and interfaith engagement, alongside dedicated support for the disability community. In support of this overarching effort, three key units within our office - the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO), Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), and Wolverine Pathways (WP) - all work closely with the VPAO to advance the strategic vision of access and opportunity at the University of Michigan.

Job Summary

Wolverine Pathways seeks to confront the barriers that limit the college and career aspirations of highly motivated students from under-resourced communities. We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to pursue a wide range of professional and academic pathways. Toward this end, we provide free college preparatory enrichment and guidance for 7th through 12th grade students in Detroit, Southfield, Ypsilanti and 10th through 12th in Grand Rapids. Responsibilities*

College Prep instructors will demonstrate exemplary service and expertise in their given subject area. Specific responsibilities include providing the following via remote instruction to a group of 20-25 scholars in the 10th OR 11th grade:

• Facilitating synchronous whole group and/or half group session with guest presenters and scholars on college preparatory topics
• Leading small group discussions and curricular activities based on workshop materials
• Monitoring, documenting, and assessing scholar in class engagement and homework in order to assess learning and provide interventions to struggling scholars.
• Ensuring scholars are fully and consistently engaged during class time
• Providing 1:1 or small consultation with scholars around select topics or as specifically requested by administrative staff.
• Maintaining open lines of communication with WP staff about academic and discipline issues through various mediums including phone calls, notes, progress reports, etc.

The required dates for Saturday synchronous virtual instruction are listed below, with class meetings generally meeting between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm.

• October 24, 2026
• October 31, 2026

In addition to these asynchronous teaching and learning commitments, it is expected that you would be available to work up to an additional 20 hours during the fall session supporting any 1:1 or small group consultation that might be required and to include a half hour prep for each class meeting.

We are also seeking some portion of college prep instructors to assist us with the execution of in-person programming that is complementary to the 10th and 11th grade synchronous programming and may include engagement with 12th grade scholars. The dates and approximate times of these in-person sessions are as follows:

• October 17, 2026 (~9:00am-2:00pm)
• October 24, 2026 (~ 9:00am - 2:00pm)
• November 14, 2026 (~9:00am-2:00pm)

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor's degree in a Liberal Arts field
• At least 2 years of experience providing college advising
• Excellent administrative skills and proficiency in online classroom management
• Background or experience with diverse populations
• Experience with middle and high school scholars
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

Modes of Work

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Additional Information

• This is a part-time temporary position
• We require your full commitment to the program session dates for which you are applying.
• The compensation for this position is $26/hour.

Instructors must attend the mandatory professional development likely to be held on a date in September and will accommodate the availability of hired staff.
