The College Connections Project located at the Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center (Manhattan EOC) seeks a part-time College Advisor. This position is an in-person position located at the Manhattan EOC. This is a federally grant funded TRIO EOC position. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon ongoing funding.

The Manhattan EOC is one of 10 EOCs across the state of New York providing free academic and career training to adult learners in New York. College Connections provides comprehensive post‑secondary access services to eligible New York City adults. The CCP aims to inspire, motivate, and empower non‑traditional adult learners to seek post‑secondary opportunities. This position reports to the College Connections Project Director. The ideal candidate has experience advising/counseling applicants through the college admissions process and can guide applicants through every facet of it. The ideal candidate must also possess excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills, proven ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals both in person and over the phone, applying tact and discretion as situations demand.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive assistance to TRIO EOC participants applying for post‑secondary opportunities including, but not limited to apprenticeship, college or other post‑secondary opportunities
  • Support TRIO EOC participants with researching and completing the post‑secondary and/or college admissions process including revision of essays, college selections, college major choices, and college enrollment
  • Assist TRIO EOC participants in completing financial aid applications (FAFSA and TAP, Loans, etc.), and financial aid verification requirements and troubleshoot participants’ technical issues by contacting college administrators and seeking out appropriate information and guidance
  • Provide workshops or presentations on career exploration, college admissions and financial aid topics
  • Recruit TRIO EOC participants through various outreach activities, including open houses, community and college fairs, email marketing, and other advertising campaigns
  • Maintain accurate records of applicant and participant progress and project activities
  • Coordinate the participant intake process to ensure compliance with TRIO EOC project guidelines
  • Ensure confidentiality of participant records in accordance with the City University and State University of New York policies and procedures
  • Remain current on the latest trends in post‑secondary education, college access and success
  • Other duties as assigned
NOTE

Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications and Core Competencies
  • Associates degree in Psychology, Education or related major with a minimum two years of experience in college access, career advising, adult education, youth development or a related field.
  • Experience in completion of apprenticeship and/or post‑secondary and financial aid applications such as the CUNY, SUNY, FAFSA and TAP applications
  • Possess extensive experience editing college admissions essays
  • Strong presentation and problem solving skills
  • Passion for college access and college success work or a willingness to learn
  • Collaborative and empathetic attitude
  • Comfortable traveling within New York City and conducting off‑site advising sessions and workshops
  • Possess the ability to adapt to changing environments
  • English proficiency required, Spanish or French fluency referred
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of college advising experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, Social Work, Counseling or other related field
  • Extensive knowledge of the college admission including CUNY, SUNY Admissions as well as financial aid processes including the student loan applications
  • Prior experience collaborating successfully in a multilingual and/or multicultural environments

Please note while this position is affiliated with the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), the physical location for this position is the College Connection Project of the Manhattan EOC located at 163 West 125th Street, New York, NY 10027.

Pay Range

$31/hour
