Job description

College Admissions Counselor - Edtech Startup Growth Role — Remote

This is a contract/1099 role, not a full-time position — an important distinction for anyone seeking benefits, job security, or a primary income source. It's best suited as supplemental income for experienced counselors already established in the field.

  • The role offers strong autonomy and exposure to a fast-paced edtech startup environment, which is valuable for professionals looking to eventually move into edtech leadership, curriculum design, or admissions consulting entrepreneurship.
  • Skills developed — portfolio building, financial aid advising, application platform expertise (Common App, Naviance, Scoir) — are in growing demand as college admissions competition intensifies.
  • Performance-based bonuses reward results, which can be lucrative for high-performers with strong student placement records.

Compensation reality check: Independent college admissions consultants typically charge $150–$300/hour or $3,000–$10,000+ per student package. ConnectPrep claims "industry-leading compensation," but no figures are provided — candidates should probe this directly before committing.

Green flags: High autonomy, flexible hours, startup growth stage, results-oriented culture.

Red flags: No salary transparency, contract-only (no benefits), minimum 5-year experience bar with no clear compensation floor disclosed. The role requires significant expertise but offers no guaranteed income baseline.

Best fit for: seasoned admissions professionals building a consulting practice or seeking to diversify their income streams.

A Little About Us:

Our goal is to redefine "tutoring" by using advanced performance metrics along with innovative teaching methods to find solutions for our students. ConnectPrep is committed to changing the way we look at education, by leading our students on a pursuit of academic excellence. Each of our students embarks on a journey of self-discovery with a curiosity to learn. Our teachers think outside of the box, inspire creativity, and are results obsessed. We connect concepts, simplify, and create opportunities for students of all ages to excel in the classroom. We have bold ideas and an eye towards the future.

So What's the Opportunity?

We're expanding our college admissions team and are in need of incredible college admissions counselors who are driven to see their students succeed. Choosing a college is a big decision and investment, and it's imperative to provide our families with all of the support they need. We provide a boutique, focused, and personalized experience for our clients. We help our students craft their own story to showcase their unique qualities.

Our admissions team creates a playbook for our families that covers every step of the application process to help ensure each student is accepted to their top ranked colleges. We put a plan in place that is focused on meeting goals and submitting an application that pops! Our CP Coaches will review curriculums, internship options, key extracurricular activities, as well as Early Decision (ED), Restrictive Early Action (REA), Early Application (EA), and Regular Decision (RD) strategies.

In return, our instructors are rewarded for all of their efforts with top-notch compensation, performance-based bonuses, and tremendous growth opportunities. This is a contractual/supplemental income opportunity where counselors have the flexibility to create their own schedules and hours that work for them.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of five years working as an admissions officer/reader at a selective college, including but not limited to experience as a high school counselor, independent counselor, or college counseling professional in a business setting
  • A thorough understanding of the high school curriculum, AP, IB, and all standardized tests including the ACT, SAT, and others
  • Experience working with students in grades 7–12, transfer applications, and private/boarding school applicants
  • Proven track record of student success with all different types of academic programs, including specializations, direct med, engineering, etc.
  • Successful methods for differentiating a student's application and building an incredible portfolio
  • Experience with athletic recruitment and other specialized endeavors
  • Excellent writer with a thorough understanding of the current admissions landscape
  • Fun, knowledgeable, a motivator, and team builder
  • Expertise with the differences between public, private, charter, and boarding school environments
  • Expert knowledge of Naviance, Scoir, and other college admissions software
  • Expertise with all application platforms (Common App, Coalition App, Apply Texas, and school-specific applications)
  • Thorough knowledge of the college process, different types of schools, resources, and environments
  • A proven track record placing students in selective colleges, prestigious high school internships, and other extracurricular activities
  • In-depth knowledge of the financial aid process, scholarship options, and other aid
  • Ability to create individualized plans for high school students covering course selection, academic interest exploration, extracurricular activities, and summer programs
  • Familiarity with the academic and social demands of high school culture and the competitive college admissions landscape
  • Conduct ongoing research on school profiles, course catalogs, and academic programs to provide well-informed responses to individual students' needs
  • Knowledge of academic programs and contests such as DECA, Science/Math Olympiads, AMC math competitions, Science Fairs, STEM competitions, etc.
  • A leader with great communication, organization, and writing skills to guide families and mentor students through the entire admissions process
  • Creative and driven, with endless energy to build life skills, self-esteem, and confidence through positive reinforcement
  • Proficient with technology
  • Patient, passionate, versatile, and dedicated to helping kids excel
  • Strong desire to grow in a fast-paced startup environment with high levels of autonomy
  • M.Ed. or Ph.D. in Education

Benefits & Compensation:

  • Industry-leading compensation and performance-based bonuses
  • Flexible work schedule with a growing company
  • This is a contractual opportunity and should be viewed as supplemental income — this is not a full-time employee (FTE) position

ConnectPrep is an equal opportunity employer EEO/M/F/D/V.

Is this a full-time position or part-time contract? This is explicitly a contractual/supplemental income opportunity — not a full-time employee (FTE) position. Counselors set their own schedules and hours. How much experience is required to apply? A minimum of five years is required, working as an admissions officer, high school counselor, independent counselor, or college counseling professional in a business setting. Can I work remotely for this role? The posting emphasizes flexible scheduling and counselors creating their own hours, strongly implying remote work is possible, though ConnectPrep does not explicitly state "fully remote" in the listing. What is the compensation structure? ConnectPrep offers what they describe as "industry-leading compensation" plus performance-based bonuses, but no specific salary figures or hourly rates are disclosed in the posting. Are there work authorization requirements for this role? Yes — applicants must be a US citizen, US national, lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the US for this employer.
